What is Acrostics and Acronyms? : What is Acrostics and Acronyms? Acrostics: A short sentence where the first letter of each word matches the first letter of the name or word in which students can recall the correct sequence. Acronyms: The first letter of each word is used to represent a keyword. Demonstrating memorization Strategy’s : Demonstrating memorization Strategy’s Other Uses for Memorization strategies : Other Uses for Memorization strategies Sounds/Symbol correspondence: present a picture or a cue that can be used to trigger an association to key information. Ex: The word Apple, along with a picture can be used as a keyword to recall the letter “a” has the /a/ sound Other uses continued : Other uses continued Words combined into silly phrases helps patterns to become easier to remember. Example: Five main short vowels combined into this phrase “apple Ed is on umbrella” = a, e, i, o, u Using Memorization Strategies in Math : Using Memorization Strategies in Math Example: multiplying nines: adding up the digits in the number will give you a result of 9. 9 x 1 = 9 x 4 = 9 x 7 = (9 + 0) = 9 (3 + 6 = 9) (6 + 3 = 9) 63 36 9 Reviewing the Strategy : Reviewing the Strategy Students become familiar with ways to remember important facts and information through silly phrases, acrostics, acronyms and mnemonics. Students use sounds and symbols with pictures to associate with key information. Students us patterns to memorize mathematical problems. Applying the Strategy : Applying the Strategy Students make up there own silly sentences or words to remember important information. What can you come up with to remember the colors of the rainbow?
