Premium member Presentation Transcript Tips and Strategies for Teaching using D2L: Tips and Strategies for Teaching using D2L Dr. Joe Zisk Professor of Secondary Education/MAT Coordinator 1This session is: This session is For faculty who will be teaching online courses. to give the "big picture" of teaching using the D2L learning management system not a D2L training workshop, it is an online teaching strategy workshop. 2 What needs to be in a good online course? : What needs to be in a good online course ? Introduction by instructor may be written, audio or video - Course syllabus put into common format - pdf or rtf Due dates an easy to find and read Tips and Expectations Provide tips and expectations that students need to be successful in your course . 3Managing Students’ questions: Managing Students’ questions Email use the subject heading online office hours time available via email or phone, use web conferencing tools ( Wimba , Elluminate , Adobe Connect 1 , Skype ) Open Discussion Board create a forum for students use to ask and answer questions about the course ( open forum , student lounge, etc.). Encourage students to help each other. 4Content Layout: Content Layout Assignments or projects assignment length may be one or more weeks long Weekly assignments each week there is an assignment due 5Weekly Assignment Layout : Weekly Assignment Layout Introduction/overview/motivation may be written and/or audio. Use Jing for narrated screen capture video. Audio example Content lecture notes may be a narrated PowerPoint presentation (use the program Impatica - to compress audio PowerPoint) Assignment activity try to keep all required links and resources on one easy to read page . To view examples go to LMSLayout continued: Layout continued Discussion board can be a place for students to post assignments and to receive peer feedback. May be two parts - one due date for original post and the other for responses . If grading the discussion post, provide a grading criteria ( rubric ) for the posts. Instructor can provide feedback for each question. exam statistics to help instructor to evaluate test questions . Indicate desired format for the paper (doc, rtf, txt, pdf, etc.) Use a rubric provide a grading rubric as part of the assignment If appropriate, provide a sample paper. 9 Instructor tips : Instructor tips Make a list of students you respond to in the discussion board. Keep a list ( excel ) and try to respond to every student a few times during the entire semester. When responding to a student's responses, use this opportunity to expand and teach. You may want to make a summary of your responses and place this in the "News" section in D2L. Use Jing to make audio comments 10Instructor tips: Instructor tips When grading papers from the dropbox , it may be easier to download all the files. Using a rubric, grade each paper and add your comments as feedback in the grade book. Advance tip: Adobe Acrobat Pro permits audio comments Create URL to each course When teaching more than one online course, it is easy to create, a URL for each course and a URL to the discussion board. 11 Tips on making your course exciting and motivating : Tips on making your course exciting and motivating Use a clear font, color, bold, and italics when appropriate. However, be careful not to overuse these features. Add images when appropriate. Maintain a reasonable color scheme Use video and audio Make sure that your content is clear, concise and accurate 12Tips continued: Tips continued Use programs that will add audio feedback . For example: Adobe Acrobat is a good way to add audio comments to a paper and then return to the student in PDF Use Web 2.0 tools ( Wikis , Blogs , Voicetread 1 , 2 , Google Docs , etc.) Develop projects that will be completed in student groups. Using Web 2.0 tools (or other tools) have students work in small groups on a project. Give the groups opportunities to present 1 their project to the rest of the class.
