Slide 1:

By Mitchell S. Metzger A Necessity for Salvation Repentance May 2010 version

Slide 2:

Some insist that “Repentance” is an Old Fashioned word? They say the same about the word “Sin.” Why do people avoid these words? “Sin is a transgression of the law.” Read: 1 John 3:4 Repentance means to turn from sin. Ashamed? Embarrassed? Afraid of reproach that comes with the words?

Slide 3:

N.T. Greek – metanoein or metanoia – to change one’s mind O.T. Hebrew – to run, to return, to turn back – to change one’s mind Combined: Repentance is an inner change of mind, resulting in an outward turning back, to face, to move in a completely new direction. Repentance is NOT an emotion but a DECISION! Example: Luke 15:11-32 – Verse 18 “I will arise and go back to my Father.” Verse 20 “So he got up and went to his father.”

Slide 4:

“Believe” is found everywhere! The word “repentance” is not. What about this? Can’t we be saved by “believing” only? “Believe”- Over 200+ Times! Acts 16:31 Romans 10:9 John 3:16 Acts 13:39 Video: The Doctrine of Believing

Slide 5:

Read: Acts 11:18 – repentance unto life Acts 20:21 – repentance towards God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ Matthew 9:13 – calling sinners to repentance Matthew 4:17 – (Jesus) repent Matthew 3:2 – (John the Baptist) repent Luke 13:3,5 – (Jesus) without repentance, they would perish

Slide 6:

If belief is all that is necessary for salvation, then the logical conclusion is that one need never repent. However the Bible tells us that a false convert “believes” and yet is not saved. READ LUKE 8:13 Side Note Warning – Read: John 2:23-25 READ John 6:44 “If God is drawing someone to Him, He would also be drawing the person away from his sin.” Lets reason together… University of Missouri

Slide 7:

Warning: Read 1 John 1:6; Proverbs 28:13 and Luke 15:10. If there is no repentance, there is no joy because there is no salvation. READ Acts 2:38 – Peter on the Day of Pentecost “…repent…for the remission of sins…” READ Acts 3:19 – Peter again… “We can not be converted, and have our sins blotted out, unless we repent.” READ Acts 17:30 “all men, everywhere [leaving no exceptions], to repent.”

Slide 8:

Read 2 Peter 3:9: “…all should come to repentance.” READ Luke 24:47 – (Jesus) “repentance and remission of sins be preached to all nations…” When Jesus sent out His disciples two by two, they “preached that men should repent.” READ Mark 6:12 University of North Carolina Fidel teaching on Repentance

Slide 9:

GOD Sinner Sin is Primarily and Ultimately vertical between you and GOD but not only vertical but… READ Psalm 51:4; Genesis 39:9; Luke 15:21; Acts 20:21 …Sin is also horizontal between you and others. *Others * Zacchaeus: Luke 19:8 * Paul: Acts 24:16

Slide 10:

QUESTIONS: Why do you think it would be easier to tell sinners to “believe” than to tell them they need to repent? Explain why salvation entails more than merely “believing in Jesus.” Who does God command to repent? [See Acts 17:30] Does there seem to be some responsibility to others when we have sinned against them?
