Rogers Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Michigan State UniversityWhy Spartan Cap?: Why Spartan Cap?The Problem?: The Problem? The majority of Michigan’s high school athletic fields are constructed on native soil . These fields rely on surface drainage during periods of heavy rainfall, failing to provide adequate drainage of surplus water . Over saturated fields result in lost soil cohesion, meaning less traction and stability with a potential rise in injuries. This, in conjunction with heavy fall season use, results in turf grass failure, decreased playability, and diminished aesthetic value. The Solutions?: The Solutions? Install Synthetic Field – cost ? $600,000 - $1,000,000 plus cost of removal once field has to be replaced 2. Install Conventional Sand-Based Field – cost? $400,000 - $600,000 plus your field will be out of use for almost 6 months while being installed 3. Sand-Capped Field – cost? $150,000 - $300,000 but still will take field out of play for few months4. Sand Cap Build-up: 4. Sand Cap Build-up Sand cap build-up system (SCBUS ), which can be done in four simple steps. The concept behind the SCBUS is to combine the advantages of the sand cap system (drainage and sand root zone playing surface ) while providing almost uninterrupted availability . The idea is to cut drains in the existing field [running lengthwise on 6 - 13’ centers depending on the surface grade and slope, put drain tile in the lines, back fill with pea stone and then sand, or a coarse sand aloneWhat’s the Cost?: What’s the Cost? But… Has anyone tried this yet?: But… Has anyone tried this yet?YES!: YES!
