Definition of a Robot : Definition of a Robot "A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks" .(By Roboto institute of America- RIA) Or a simpler version • An automatic device that performs functions normally ascribed to humans or a machine in the form of a human. What is a Robot : What is a Robot • The term robot derives from the Czech word robota, meaning forced to work or compulsory service. History of Robot : History of Robot • The word robot was introduced in 1921 by Karel Capek in his drama, Rossum’s Universal Robotics. First Commercial Robot : First Commercial Robot • After the 1950’s the first commercial robot nicknamed the 'Unimate‘, was created. • The first Unimate was installed at a General Motors plant to work with heated die-casting machines . Types of Robots : Types of Robots 1.Industrial Robots –materials handling –welding –inspection –Laboratory applications 2.Domestic Robots -those designed to perform household tasks - modern toys which are programmed to do things like talking, walking and dancing. The Purpose of Robots : The Purpose of Robots Repetitive tasks that robots can do 24/7. Robots never get sick or need time off. Robots can do tasks considered too dangerous for humans. Robots can operate equipment to much higher precision than humans. May be cheaper over the long term May be able to perform tasks that are impossible for humans Robot Anatomy : Robot Anatomy Manipulator Body Arm Wrist (Pitch,Yaw,Roll) Slide 10: Joints and Links : Joints and Links Manipulator constructed by series of joints and links. Joint-Relative movement between 2 parts Translational motion Linear joint Orthogonal joint Rotational motion Rotating joint Twisting joint Revolving joint Link-Rigid components of manipulator Main Parts of Industrial Robots : Main Parts of Industrial Robots 1.Structure 2.Actuators Hydralic – Heavy duty ( Cylinder, Tank, Pump, Motor, direction control valve) Pneumatic - light duty(Cylinder, compressor ) Electric -servo motor, stepping motor 3.Sensors 4.Computer(Microprocessor) Classification : Classification Based on movement Fixed Flexible Programmable Based on function Pick and place Universal Special purpose Applications : Applications Material Handling Machine loading and unloading Inspection Multi shift operations Hazardous work environment Repetitive work cycle You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
