Since the North and South were not prepared for the war, consistent uniforms became a problem. Most men joined wearing everyday clothes.A few of the men had varied uniforms from previous wars. : The Civil War began in 1861. Since the North and South were not prepared for the war, consistent uniforms became a problem. Most men joined wearing everyday clothes.A few of the men had varied uniforms from previous wars. Both armies had to set rules for the uniforms so they could tell themselves apart from the enemy. The Union army had an easier time with the uniforms because they could get good-quality material and most garment factories were in the North. : Both armies had to set rules for the uniforms so they could tell themselves apart from the enemy. The Union’s standard uniform was a blue wool suit made of material called “shoddy” with a long jacket. A short jacket was worn if you were in the cavalry.
