The Civil War began in 1861. Since the North and South were not prepared for the war, consistent uniforms became a problem. Most men joined wearing everyday clothes.A few of the men had varied uniforms from previous wars. :

Both armies had to set rules for the uniforms so they could tell themselves apart from the enemy. The Union army had an easier time with the uniforms because they could get good-quality material and most garment factories were in the North. :

The Union’s standard uniform was a blue wool suit made of material called “shoddy” with a long jacket. A short jacket was worn if you were in the cavalry. The pants were dark blue at first, then changed to light blue pants with a dark blue jacket. :

Each soldier had a belt set with a cartridge box, a bayonet and scabbard for his rifle, a canteen, canvas backpack, wool blanket, poncho, and a blanket roll with a half-shelter. Razors, socks, toothbrush, and writing tools were kept in their blanket rolls. :

The Southern army’s standard uniform was a short jacket and pants made from a material called “jean.” This was a rugged blend of cotton and wool that was dyed gray or brown. These soldiers didn’t have as much gear as the Northern soldiers because of the shortage of supplies. :

Different colored trim showed the different army divisions for both. Cavalrymen wore yellow trim, dragoons wore orange, mounted rifleman wore emerald green, infantry wore light blue, and artillerymen worered. :

Medical personnel wore black trim. Generals, staff, and engineer officers wore cream colored trim. Officers also wore a stripe of theirdivision color down the leg of theirpants. :
