It has become a byword for attrition warfare, for stalemate in conflict, with a slow wearing down of opposing forces . Life in the Trenches The first thing a new recruit would notice on the way to the Frontline was the smell, rotting bodies in shallow graves, men who hadn't washed in weeks because there were no facilities, overflowing cess pits, creosol or chloride of lime, used to stave off the constant threat of disease and infection.Pics of warfare: Pics of warfareWomens: Womens As men left jobs to fight overseas, they were replaced by Women filled many jobs brought into existence by wartime needs. As a result the number of women employed increased from 3,224,600 in July, 1914 to 4,814,600 in January 1918. Nearly 200,000 women were employed in government departments. Half a million became clerical workers in private offices. Women worked as conductors on trams and buses. A quarter of a million worked on the land. The greatest increase of women workers was in engineering. Over 700,000 of these women worked in the highly dangerous munitions industry. Industries that had previously excluded women now welcomed them. There was a particular demand for women to do heavy work such as unloading coal, stoking furnaces and building ships.Women’s right: Women’s right As women’s responsibilities increased and their expectations about their role in society changed. They showed they could do the kind of work that men had been allowed to do before the war. More women expected to have the same job opportunities as men, to receive equal pay and enjoy the same rights as men. In 1918, Britain gave women who were over the age of 30 and who owned property the right to vote in the elections. The women who were not allowed to vote organized protest demanding the same right for all women.
