Hi friends, we are the Spanish students participating in the Comenius project “From Our Roots to a Common European Future” and we are going to present you our school, La Alborá, and the region where we live.

The center is situated in Alosno, a village located in the middle-western part of Huelva, in the region known as “Andévalo”; although students from other neighbouring villages also come here to study. These are: Tharsis, Villanueva de las Cruces, Montes de San Benito, Cabezas Rubias, Santa Bárbara de Casas and Villanueva de los Castillejos. :

This is a rural area that can be considered as a disadvantaged one and it's characterized by low/middle levels of consumption, dependent on activities closely related to natural resources. In this way, we can mention the study of this zone by the NASA scientists in order to prove the possible existence of life in Mars taking as reference the anaerobic species that live in the river Tinto. :

Now, let's talk about our center. In La Alborá, apart from Secondary, we also have post-compulsory education: Bachillerato and Business Studies (professional training). There are 29 teachers who are very concerned about us trying to promote our comprehensive development from an academic, personal and socio-labour point of view. :

There are 29 teachers who are very concerned about us trying to promote our comprehensive development from an academic, personal and socio-labour point of view.

Because of this, we are participating in different projects and plans. For example: Preventing to Live, Let's Look After the Coast, Classrooms without Smoke, Road Safety, Grow with your tree, etc. Our center also encourages the collaboration of other sectors of the community in its daily routine at the same time that we try to connect the school activities to our environment. :

La Alborá is a CIT center, therefore in the classrooms we have a computer for two students; in addition, this year we are using digital blackboards for the first time in the First course of Compulsory Secondary Education, together with personal computers provided by the Junta de Andalucía for each student. It's fantastic and very useful to study with new technologies which allow us to have more possibilities when working on the different subjects. :

The use of new technologies is also present in our daily life outside the center. We profit from them in the obtaining of wind power. In this zone, we find the European Center for the Approval of Solar Cells as well as a Center for the Control of the Ozone Levels in the Atmosphere. :

As to the customs of our region, old traditions are deeply rooted and we like to keep them up because we feel identified with them too, so we take an active part in the diverse festivities and celebrations of our folklore: :

In Alosno, for example, we can mention the festivity in honor of its patron Saint Juan Bautista and the Cruces de Mayo. Besides, this village is known as “The Cradle of the Fandango”, the traditional style of flamenco singing. :

In Montes de San Benito, Villanueva de las Cruces, Alosno and the other surrounding villages, it must be stressed the popular country dancings which are characterized by the ancient clothing and the use of swords and castanets. In this way we fuse a rich and multicultural past with a modern and technological reality. :
