So here are some things for teachers to consider… Reducing Student Stress: : Reducing Student Stress: Improve your time management and organization skills and encourage them to do the same. This is leading by example. If you take the class seriously, they will too. Think ahead…always have a Plan B in case Plan A doesn’t work out. Reducing Student Stress: : Reducing Student Stress: Accent the positive and learn from the negative. Dwell on the positives. Remember, for every one thing that goes wrong, there are probably ten things that went right. Don’t dwell on mistakes, learn from them. If it’s your fault, admit it and don’t waste time and energy with excuses. If it’s their fault, help them learn from it and move on. Reducing Student Stress: : Reducing Student Stress: Lighten up. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Don’t sweat the small stuff. A little humor can often diffuse a tense situation. Become more flexible. Have a forgiving view of events and people. Accept the fact that we live in an imperfect world. Reducing Student Stress: : Reducing Student Stress: Open communication quashes feelings of mistrust and unfairness. Teachers MUST be consistent, giving equal treatment to all their students. This will go a long way in building student trust. Enforce policies through clear communication. Make sure memos, postings, emails, etc. are clearly worded and will not confuse students. Reducing Student Stress: : Reducing Student Stress: Get up and stretch BEFORE you send your reply. Save your response to a tricky email and walk away from it before you send it. When you come back and re-read it, after you have calmed down, you may see more emotion in your response than you wished to convey. Reducing Student Stress: : Reducing Student Stress: Focus on understanding rather than on being understood. Want to be loved by your students? Focus on loving them first. Add an ounce of love to everything you do. By showing students you care, they understand that the class is important and that they too are important. Reducing Student Stress: : Reducing Student Stress: Ask questions! It will clarify things for them or trigger their own questions. Do one thing at a time. When you focus all your attention on one thing or one person at a time, you are less likely to make mistakes and more likely to understand the situation correctly by not making assumptions. Reducing Student Stress: : Reducing Student Stress: Simplify, simplify, simplify ! ! ! ! ! This cuts down on confusion…yours and your students. Always give feedback. Students want to know whether they are meeting expectations, so don’t wait until they ask for it. Consistent feedback is a must. Some students need more attention than others, but everyone’s performance is enhanced if teachers frequently affirm individual efforts. Reducing Student Stress: : Reducing Student Stress: If a problem or situation seems too complex, then seek help. Your co-workers may have already faced a similar situation and therefore could give you invaluable advice. Even if a situation isn’t complex, talk it over with your co-workers because they could offer insight or may be facing the same problem themselves. Reducing Student Stress: : Reducing Student Stress: Show your appreciation. There are many ways to demonstrate appreciation, but the most effective is a sincere comment. Don’t stop with your students, let everyone in your life know they are appreciated. You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
