slide 3:

Discolored or weak teeth and cosmetic purposes are some of the reasons you may need to have a dental crown procedure done.

slide 4:

Knowing your end goal will determine the type of crown you choose.

slide 5:

A family dentist will help you make this decision.

slide 6:

Here are some of the things that you should expect with this procedure.

slide 7:

CHOOSING A CROWN

slide 8:

First schedule an appointment with your dentist. He or she will go over all your options and explain the pros and cons of the procedure.

slide 9:

The type of crown chosen must be one that your tooth can support.

slide 10:

There are various types of crowns such as:  Ceramic  Porcelain  Resin  Stainless Steel

slide 11:

Each of these will provide different benefits. However all crowns offer a solution to a specific dental issue such as problems caused by an accident normal wear and tear or an oral disease.

slide 12:

MULTIPLE DENTAL VISITS

slide 13:

You will typically need to make two trips to the dentist for this procedure. This can vary from dentist-to-dentist.

slide 14:

At the first appointment the dentist will evaluate your tooth to verify that it can support the crown. After this is done they will begin filing the tooth down.

slide 15:

Sometimes the tooth can be badly damaged or cracked. If so it may need to be filled so the tooth will be big enough to support the crown.

slide 16:

Otherwise the tooth would reject the crown. Remember if the procedure is not done correctly it could make the tooth worse which may lead to severe health issues.

slide 17:

After successfully filing the tooth your dentist will take an impression. This impression will be used to make the permanent crown.

slide 18:

You will receive a temporary crown to protect your tooth until the permanent one is available. Once the crown is ready you will have your second appointment.

slide 19:

The first step is removing the temporary crown. Using a special adhesive your dentist will position and fasten the new crown to the tooth.

slide 20:

This part of the procedure will bring everything together. The crown will only be cemented when you and the dentist agree on the fit.

slide 21:

Remember that once this is done some changes such as various shape modifications or colors cannot be made.

slide 22:

WHAT TO DO NEXT

slide 23:

You will need to take some precautions with your new crown. The dentist will go over a few instructions with you.

slide 24:

For example you may need to avoid eating sticky or hard food until the crown has enough time to cure.

slide 25:

You will likely experience some numbness for a couple of days. After the numbness has disappeared you can begin testing the bite of your crown.

slide 26:

If it does not feel right you will need to contact your dentist immediately.

slide 27:

TAKE TIME TO ADJUST

slide 28:

You may go through a period of adjustment. However if the procedure is done correctly …

slide 29:

… your new crown will begin to feel like a normal tooth in terms of its function and appearance.

slide 30:

Before the procedure be sure to ask your family dentist as many questions as necessary. He or she will help you decide what type of crown is best for you.

slide 31:

They also will explain the procedure in more depth such as its pros and cons.

slide 32:

And before you know it you will be smiling and showing off your new pearly whites.
