Weekly Membership produce Sales: : Weekly Membership produce Sales: Garden at Eden Supplemented Community Supported Agriculture or “SCSA”. This is a combination of an organic produce corporative and a farm share program. To produce a consistent sales base we intend to sell weekly produce shares to a maximum of 40 individuals. The produce will be packed in a returnable, reusable tote for pick up. A benefit of membership will be direct access to day of harvest fresh organic vegetables. The weekly produce will be targeted at 70% from the garden at Eden. 30% of the produce will be “Supplemented” organic produced that is not available from our farm to offer variety to our subscribers. The garden will order the supplemental produce in and combine it with our own harvest for shareholders of the SCSA. Examples of supplemented produce are (Brussels sprouts, apples, citrus, grapes, bananas, Kiwi, and others). Since shares will be identical the garden will sell units of 40 items through this market. Produce in lower volumes will be sold through the farmer’s market, restaurants, and our weekly order form. Eden Student Activities: : Eden Student Activities: During our first year at the garden we began two types of activities with the students. One was lessons and hands on activities focused more on education than production. The other was more task oriented jobs to be completed. In the coming season we hope to expand the reach of the garden activities to more members of the Eden community and with a greater depth of involvement for all. Student farmer lesson can easily reach all aspects of the operation. For 2010 -2011 we hope to include a few “cooking classes in the group home during the week for students to try the produce. Following is a list of “job task” design for our student farmers. Again we shall use the small garden as a training field for our student farmers and as they develop task proficiency, they can graduate into working that task in the production field. Introduction to organic gardening class will be a course of 6 classes held every other Saturday on the farm. If interest is over 30 seats for this class, a second course can be offered on the alternating Saturdays. Day classes will be held on the first Sunday of the month and if interest exceeds seats, they can be repeated later in the month. Introduction to organic gardening class: : Introduction to organic gardening class: This will be a course in how to grow food at home, experienced on the farm and spaced in time for students to witness all plant cycles and farm operations to maximize the experience. September 25– December 11 every other Saturday from 8:30 – 11:30 AM Second course if needed October 2– December 18 Topics covered: planning, planting, compost, irrigation, perennials, protection, fertilizing, and harvest. Sign up available in August 2010 Water Reservoir Container Gardens Class: : Water Reservoir Container Gardens Class: This is a course in how to build and use water reservoir container gardens. These are special container gardens that have a water reservoir built into the bottom to allow for the perfect soil water and air ratio for growing vegetables. Everyone becomes an expert. They are the easiest way to grow vegetable crops and can fit anywhere. Can be made easily accessible for all ages and abilities. Perfect for schools, areas of poor soil, fire ant prone places, or beginners. Also learn essentials of potting mixes for growing. Volunteers enjoy working on whatever the needs of the garden are at the time and learn from experience. This out reach helps network and support the garden at Eden.
