STARTING OF BOER WAR T he first Boer War of 1880-1881 has also been named the Transvaal Rebellion, as the Boers of the Transvaal revolted against the British annexation of 1877. Most scholars prefer to call the war of 1899-1902 the South African War, thereby acknowledging that all South Africans, white and black, were affected by the war and that many were participants. The republicans acquired the name 'Boers' - the Dutch and Africans word for farmers .

CAUSES OF BOER WAR The first Boer war (1880-1881) was a rebellion of boers against the British rule in the Transvaal that re-established their independence. The conflict occur against the backdrop of the Pretoria government becoming increasingly ineffective at dealing with growing claims on South African land from rival interest within the country.

KEY POINTS OF THE WAR The war was between the Transvaal boers and the British. When the British annexed Transvaal in 1877 this greatly annoyed the boers. In 1877, the Pedi attacked the boers of Transvaal, and boers claimed the British had not adequately assisted them. The Transvaal population included many who were in debt to cape bankers, perhaps adding to negative British perception of the boers. The British wished to bring Transvaal by force in to a union, which furthered chances of war.

THE SECOND BOER WAR The Second War (1899–1902), by contrast, was a lengthy war—involving large numbers of troops from many British possessions, which ended with the conversion of the Boer republics into British. These colonies later formed part of the Union of Africa. The British fought directly against the Transvaal and the Oranje Vrijstaat, defeating their forces first in open warfare and then in a long and bitter guerrilla campaign. British losses were high due to both disease and combat.

OTHER REASONS OF WAR 1.The other cause for the Boer war was the difference in political ideologies between the British and the Boers. The British imperialist sought a unification of the whole of South Africa under the British flag. The Boers who existed in two main republics namely the South African Republic and the Orange Free State sought to maintain their nationality. The presence of these two states therefore served as a stumbling block for the British idea of unification .

OTHER REASONS OF WAR This problem of difference in political ideology was further compounded by the discovery of gold in the South African Republic. This discovery lured thousands prospectors and miners from all over the world to the goldfields with one purpose in mind - to seek their fortune. The inhabitants of the South African Republic saw the newcomers as a threat to their continuing independence .

CONTROVERSY AND SIGNIFICANCE During the later stages of the Second Boer War, the British pursued the policy of rounding up and isolating the Boer civilian population in concentration camps, one of the earliest uses of this method by modern powers. The wives and children of Boer guerrillas were sent to these camps, which had poor hygiene and little food (due to attacks by Boer guerrillas on supply trains). Many of the children in these camps died, as did some of the adults. The German empire saw this as a clear sign of British weakness as it was struggling to maintain a portion of its empire, and sent the Kruger telegram, congratulating the leader of the Boers on his rebellion
