Stands on the Slavery Issue:

Stands on the Slavery Issue Lincoln (Republican): Would prohibit slavery in the territories and contain slavery to where it already existed. Douglas (Democrat): Believed in popular sovereignty (the right of territories to enter the Union as free or slave), but opposed a federal slave code (to protect the institution of slavery in the territories). Bell (Constitutional Union): Avoid the slavery issue and keep the Union together. Breckinridge (Democrat): Supported popular sovereignty and a federal slave code.
