The Christmas feast is had any time from the 24th December night to 25th December night. Most go to midnight mass on 24th night and ring in the birth of Christ and then gather around for a sumptuous feast. Roasted meats sweets in the form of puddings and cakes are a staple of all Christmas feasts. The addition of Turkey as an integral dish of the Christmas feast happened in the 17th Century. Previously the Christmas feast used to include Boar and Goose while the rich ate Peacock or Swan. In fact people used to have ‘Goose Clubs’ in medieval England where people used to pay small amounts of money throughout the year to the farmer so that they could afford a Goose for the family Christmas Dinner.According to Wikipedia Christmas dinner in the United Kingdom is usually eaten in the afternoon on 25 December. The dinner usually consists of turkey served with tuffing gravy and sometimes pigs in blankets devils on horseback cranberry sauce or redcurrant jelly bread sauce Yorkshire pudding roast potatoes sometimes also boiled or mashed vegetables usually boiled or steamed particularly Brussels sprouts and parsnips with dessert of Christmas pudding or plum pudding sometimes mince pies or trifle with brandy butter and/or cream. So are you planning a traditional Christmas menu or something more contemporary The trend for the 2017 Christmas seems to be Black forest cake be it a Gateau or a Wreath cake. Gin and Prosecco are the chosen season’s favourite tipple. Fresh flavours in crisps and different kinds of nibbles beyond the staples of peanuts raisins and cashew. Go for exotic nuts or desiccated apricots figs and cranberries. South East Asian nibbles too are trending viz. steamed Hirata buns Korean BBQ pulled pork. There is also a wide variety of British Cheeses to choose from this holiday season. Biscuits and shortbreads are also a favourite this Christmas. Whether going for trending items or traditional ones let the spirit of Christmas be upheld. We wish all our patrons and readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Prosperous New Year.
