Premium member Presentation Transcript Flow Resources : Flow Resources Water Introduction : Introduction Introduction : Introduction Flow Resources are important everyone of us Water is global commons We need it to survive However not all areas get an equal amount We are affecting it Irrigation : Irrigation Irrigation : Irrigation Surface irrigation Most uses Water evaporates Sprinkler irrigation Somewhat used Water evaporates Drip irrigation Expensive technology Water doesn’t evaporate Using Water Better : Using Water Better To use water better people have developed a technique called terracing Farmers turn the mountain side into terraces by carving steps This prevents soil erosion And the water does not run off River Diversions : River Diversions Pros Irrigated crops need water Dams and canals can control the water River diversions have made good agricultural land in California A river diversion is when the flow or path of the river is changed artificially If a city or area needs extra water, than a river is diverted Cons Harmful affects to environment Areas now receive less water because of river diversions and plants and animals die The water evaporates and massive amounts of salt and minerals are deposited which harm the ecosystem Overfishing : Overfishing Overfishing : Overfishing As you can see the absolute maximum amount of fish we can catch is 80 million tons, however we are catching up to 101 million tons We are putting many species of sea life at risk We are too efficient at catching fish and as the fish population declines we try harder to catch more fish to keep up with demand; and the cycle continues Overfishing : Overfishing Pollution : Pollution Pollution : Pollution Pollution= waste that is dumped where it shouldn’t Lots of pollution in water From municipalities, ships, factories Include pesticides/fertlizer that flow into our rivers Improperly treated nuclear waste Heat from power plants Industrial waste from cheap factories that don’t treat their waste Pollution affects us We have to drink the same water we pollute in It is damaging many ecosystem and species Aral Sea Disaster : Aral Sea Disaster This is the Aral Sea Over 30 years it has shrunk 50% Two rivers feed the lake but the government diverted the rivers to make farmland and irrigate crops As almost no water flowed in much of the water evaporated That left the remaining water concentrated with salt and minerals which killed the fish The lake will be gone in 4 years This is irresponsible water management Threats to Water and Water Management : Threats to Water and Water Management We need to take care of our water as we need it However we are very irresponsible with water River diversions destroy many habitats Pollution is contaminating our water Fish are disappearing from overfishing Cities are using too much water which creates low quality water 84% of the fish live in the continental shelves (the part of a continent that is submerged in relatively shallow water.) These are the areas most polluted from sewage and contaminants from land A small change in the ocean food chain and the food chain will collapse Conclusion : Conclusion Water is an important resource that we must protect River diversions are harmful Pollution is harming animals including us, plants and water Overfishing is destroying the fish populations We know we are harming flow resources yet we do nothing to stop You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
