Slide 3: … it speaks of the great dignity and mission of marriage in an age in which so many forces are directed against human love. These forces are directed at the very heart of human love in which is contained not only the mystery of the union of two persons, but also the mystery of the transmission of human life. Slide 4: Paul VI gives us a wonderful and authentic understanding of the human person and of human love. When love is given and received in marriage, it becomes a true gift, enriching the person and humanity. We have great reason to celebrate for we all depend upon the truth about married love. The Encyclical give importance to life and marriage : The Encyclical give importance to life and marriage What is it all about? : What is it all about? Slide 7: Marriage is a personal union of individuals. This union may also be called matrimony, while the ceremony that marks its beginning is usually called a wedding and the married status created is sometimes called wedlock. Slide 8: In God's plan for marriage, holy matrimony is considered an intimate union in which the spouses give themselves, as equal persons, completely and lovingly to one another. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that marriage is both a natural institution and a sacred union because it is rooted in the divine plan for creation. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) Slide 9: Marriage is seen as a public sign in at least two ways: a) - It is a public sign that a husband and a wife each gives oneself totally to each other. b) - It is also a public statement about God: the loving union of husband and wife speaks of family values and also God's values. Slide 10: THE MOST SERIOUS DUTY of transmitting human life, for which married persons are the free and responsible collaborators of God the Creator, has always been a source of great joys to them, even if sometimes accompanied by not a few difficulties and distress. (HV 1) Slide 11: Marriage is not, then, the effect of chance or the product of evolution of unconscious natural forces; it is the wise institution of the Creator to realize in mankind His design of love. (HV 8) Marriage is… : Marriage is… …l.i.f.e. Life is… : Life is… …PRECIOUS L.I.F.E. : L.I.F.E. LOVE : LOVE Slide 16: This love is first of all fully human, that is to say, of the senses and of the spirit at the same time. It is not, then, a simple transport of instinct and sentiment, but also, and principally, an act of the free will, intended to endure and to grow by means of the joys and sorrows of daily life, in such a way that husband and wife become one only heart and one only soul, and together attain their human perfection. Slide 17: Then, this love is total, that is to say, it is a very special form of personal friendship, in which husband and wife generously share everything, without undue reservations of selfish calculations. Whoever truly loves his marriage partner loves not only for what he receives, but for the partner's self, rejoicing that he can enrich his partner with the gift of himself. (HV 9) intimacy : intimacy … becoming ONE Slide 19: husband and wife are united in chaste intimacy, and by means of which human life is transmitted, are, as the Council recalled, "noble and worthy“ (HV 11) faithfulness : faithfulness Slide 21: …this love is faithful and exclusive until death. (HV 9) … is destined to continue, raising up new lives. "Marriage and conjugal love are by their nature ordained toward the begetting and educating of children. Children are really the supreme gift of marriage and contribute very substantially to the welfare of their parents“ (HV 9) encouragement : encouragement Slide 23: the Church, calling men back to the observance of the norms of the natural law, as interpreted by their constant doctrine, teaches that each and every marriage act must remain open to the transmission of life [12]. (HV 11) Marriage is truly unitive and procreative : Marriage is truly unitive and procreative Misconception on Humane Vitae : Misconception on Humane Vitae Slide 26: Humanae Vitae came as a shock to many Christians inside and outside the Catholic Church, who thought that the church was ready to accommodate herself to the modern view of marriage as primarily a relational, not procreative, institution. Three Failures : Three Failures First, Humanae Vitae came at the worst possible moment in history. The encyclical arrived in the wake of Vatican II, just after the Catholic Church had thrown open her windows to the modern world. Slide 28: Second, and just as ominously, this rejection led many of these same Catholics to call into question their commitment to the whole fabric of Catholic moral teaching on sex-related matters. If the Catholic Church is wrong on birth control, the thinking went, she is probably wrong on divorce and remarriage, premarital sex, and so on. Slide 29: Third, the mistaken view that the church is hopelessly out of touch, hopelessly inflexible, and hopelessly bereft of compassion on matters related to sex and marriage has been and continues to be advanced by Catholic intellectuals with substantial public platforms. Slide 30: Therefore, we as Christians, we know that applying biblical principles to marriage will give us a stronger foundation than those of our unbelieving friends and neighbors. On the transmission of life : On the transmission of life Slide 32: Responsible men can become more deeply convinced of the truth of the doctrine laid down by the Church on this issue if they reflect on the consequences of methods and plans for artificial birth control. Let them first consider how easily this course of action could open wide the way for marital infidelity and a general lowering of moral standards. Not much experience is needed to be fully aware of human weakness and to understand that human beings—and especially the young, who are so exposed to temptation—need incentives to keep the moral law, and it is an evil thing to make it easy for them to break that law. Slide 33: Another effect that gives cause for alarm is that a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due to a woman, and, disregarding her physical and emotional equilibrium, reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires, no longer considering her as his partner whom he should surround with care and affection. (HV 17) Slide 34: Appeal to Public Authorities To Rulers, who are those principally responsible for the common good, and who can do so much to safeguard moral customs, we say: Do not allow the morality of your peoples to be degraded; do not permit that by legal means practices contrary to the natural and divine law be introduced into that fundamental cell, the family. Slide 35: Quite other is the way in which public authorities can and must contribute to the solution of the demographic problem: namely, the way of a provident policy for the family, of a wise education of peoples in respect of moral law and the liberty of citizens. (HV 23) Gen 1:26-31creation of man as the image and likeness of God : Gen 1:26-31creation of man as the image and likeness of God God gave instruction to man : God gave instruction to man - “Go”- “Be fruitful”- “Multiply” : - “Go”- “Be fruitful”- “Multiply” With the Pope’s Encyclical, he is calling all of us to be real apostles and guides to others to value Life and Family. : With the Pope’s Encyclical, he is calling all of us to be real apostles and guides to others to value Life and Family.
