Discerning your service as a disciple Some reflections from the journey so far :

Discerning your service as a disciple Some reflections from the journey so far Is service really for me? How can I serve? Inspiring one another to love and good deeds

PowerPoint Presentation:

Part 1. Is service really for me? Therefore I urge you brothers in view of God’s mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship Romans 12 v1 Service is our spiritual act of worship You my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature, rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command “Love your neighbour as yourself” Gal 5 v13-14 When we serve others, we are serving God.

It’s a privilege to serve God:

It’s a privilege to serve God He can find someone else! Don’t bury the talents that God has given you! Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for me, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3 v23-24

PowerPoint Presentation:

“God is not looking for success, He is looking for faithfulness” Seek ye first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6v33 “Redeem the time” If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever Amen 1 Peter 4 v.11 Beware! Take a risk! You might be asked to serve God in a way that you’d never have imagined!

Part 2. How can I serve Christ? For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2 v 10 Only we can serve God in this generation. 2012…

We are members of one body:

We are members of one body We are one body of Christ made up of many parts We all need each other Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body… But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 1 Corinthians 12 v.14-20 Let us value one another

Spiritual gifts:

Spiritual gifts It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ . Ephesians 4 v11-16 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 1Corinthians 12 v. 27-28

Spiritual gifts are given for the common good:

Spiritual gifts are given for the common good There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12 v 4-7

In His wisdom, God gives different people different gifts:

In His wisdom, God gives different people different gifts For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach, if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. Romans 12 v3-8

The ‘upside-down’ Kingdom:

The ‘upside-down’ Kingdom “..whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” Mark 10, v 43-45

Motivations of the heart :

Let’s be practical:

Let’s be practical Take the initiative – step out in faith Pray before you go and be ready to listen Have a conversation with a Priest who knows you well Make yourself available – give of your time Be ready to lay aside your agenda and your own will. Essentially we need to die to ourselves, before Christ can truly show us how we can serve Him

Love :

Love What’s love got to do with it? If I speak in tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging symbol. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing . If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13 v 1-3

SERVILITY SERVANTHOOD Serves out of… a “I have to” kind of attitude a “I want to serve God” attitude Motivated to serve by… A concern for what others will say if I don’t serve Love for God and a desire to have fellowship and communion with God. Serves with the attitude of… Doing the minimum to get by Willing to go outside the ‘job description’ Has a mindset that says… “What’s in it for me?” “How can my life best honour you Lord?” Serves with a spirit of… “Hey, I did that…I have something to offer… look at me me me!” “God did that” “God gave me this gift to serve Him” The results are… trying to draw attention to themselves “Don’t look at me, I am glad to serve you but let’s give the glory to God – thanks be to God for all things!”

Serving in this generation…:

Serving in this generation… We are the body of Christ alive in this generation How will we respond to the calling to serve Christ in our local church families? In our communities? We need to encourage one another to become fully functioning members of the body of Christ, so that the Church can grow in maturity and glorify God.
