Product innovation consists of successful exploitation of new ideas (Myers and Marquis , 1969) It implies two conditions: novelty and use (Gee, 1981).

PowerPoint Presentation:

Product innovation is a process that includes the technical design, R&D, manufacturing, management and commercial activities involved in the marketing of a new (or improved) product (Freeman, 1982)

PowerPoint Presentation:

Workplace innovation is the intentional introduction and application within a role, group or organization of ideas, processes, products or procedures , new to the relevant unit of adoption , designed to significantly benefit the individual, the group, the organization or wider society West and Farr (1990),(p. 9)

PowerPoint Presentation:

What is Innovation? Innovation may be defined as exploiting new ideas leading to the creation of a new product, process or service . It is not just the invention of a new idea that is important, but it is actually “ bringing it to market ”, putting into practice and exploiting it in a manner that leads to new products, services or systems that add value or improve quality.

Competitive advantage is increasingly derived from knowledge and technological skills and experience in the creation of new products . ( Teece et al., 1997; Tidd et al., 1997).

PowerPoint Presentation:

Hax (1989) argues that global strategies are dependent in large part on accelerating the speed at which innovations are translated into profitable commercial ventures. These conditions have led management theorists and practitioners alike to call for more creativity in management practices, products, and production processes (Wheelwright, 1987).

Demands for organizational innovation and technological advantage are increasingly crucial components of competitive strategy for many firms. ( Buffa , 1984; Butler, 1988; Miller 1989). Most firms face serious competitive challenges due to the rapid pace and unpredictability of technology change ( Ansoff , 1988).

In today’s global and dynamic competitive environment, product innovation is becoming more and more relevant, mainly as a result of three major trends. (Wheelwright and Clark, 1992)

In the 1960s, an advertiser could reach 80% of U.S. women with a spot aired simultaneously on CBS (VIA ), NBC (GE ), and ABC (DIS ). Today, an ad would have to run on 100 TV channels to have a prayer of duplicating this feat. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_28/b3891001_mz001.htm

Technology is transforming innovation at its core, allowing companies to test new ideas at speeds and prices that were unimaginable even a decade ago. Companies are able to get a much better idea of how their customers behave and what they want. Google Inc., which runs 50 to 200 search experiments at any given time. The New, Faster Face of Innovation Thanks to technology, change has never been so easy or so cheap http:// online.wsj.com/video/balancing-innovation-with-new-strategies/15F96488-1AC1-4F5A-94B4-99DB9502D1EA.html
