Opening Sequences Research By Francesca Knight Part 3

The Phantom Of The Opera:

The Phantom Of The Opera The opening sequence starts with showing the production company logos which produced the film in silence with no background music: ‘Warner Bro. Pictures’ and ’Odyssey Entertainment’. The shot then transitions to a black screen where sounds of wind is played gently in the background. The shot then transitions with a flame of a candle slowly alighting itself revealing a candle where eerie, non- diegetic orchestral music begins to play. This gives off the impression that something odd is going to happen in the film, it also sets it to be a dark film with a twist somewhere along the story line. The title of the film is then revealed above the candle light in the same orange/yellow colour that the flame gives off. As the lighting of the candle gives a sepia colour effect, this gives the impression that the film is based a while back, this is also backed up with the candle as lighting. The font which is used for the title is an elegant font which looks as if it has been written with a fountain pen or even a feather and ink. As the title contains the word ‘opera’ this lets the audience know that the film is going to be based around the theatre and the opera, this also connects with the candle lighting as opera was more popular in the olden days as to compared to now days.

The Cat In The Hat:

The Cat In The Hat The opening sequence starts with showing the production logos which produced the film: ‘Universal Studios’ , ‘Dream Works’ and ‘Imagine Entertainment’ however they have been changed to match the colour of the children’s book ‘Cat In The Hat’ to match the drawing style and also matches in colour of the cat’s hat, red and white. The shot then starts to transition with the camera a moving where a narrative voice over begging to start to tell the story and the institutional details start to be shown as the camera moves. The institutional details used a red block text which is easy to read and understand as the target audience for the film is children, also they used cartoon images from the book Dr. Seuss uses to illustrate his stories. The shot then transitions through the clouds to real life where the title to the film is revealed. The font is bright red and the text used is bold so it easily stands out and grabs the audiences attention, the title is also placed over an establishing shot which sets the scene for the film. As the shot moves on downwards into the real world, the font colour for the institutional details changes into a white bold font with is still clear and easily stands out.

The Incredible Hulk:

The Incredible Hulk The opening sequence starts with showing the production logos which produced the film: ‘Universal Studios’ and ‘Marvel Studios’. The institutional details is then shown next in a bright green capitalised font on the background of x-rays, this suggests that there is either going to be a change in the human’s physical structure or that something bad is going to happen. The next shot is off liquid running through the body’s vanes, this gives the impression more that something is going to happen to the body’s physical structure and possibly the DNA structure as well causing a physical change to the body or a mutation. The shot carries on revealing more images of x-rays of bodies, this suggests to the audience that the film is going to be a sci-fi and as it is a Marvel film, it is going to be based on superheroes, this lets the audience know that the film is going to be an action adventure film. The shot then changes with the camera taking us inside the body where the title to the film is revealed, the text word ‘hulk’ is written in huge letters with the words ‘the incredible’ running through the middle, this shows us that the name hulk is important and should be remember as it dominates the whole title. As the name is written in big letters, this also gives the impression that the hulk is going to be a big character and is going to be very powerful and dominate people like the name does in the title.

Blades of Glory :

Blades of Glory Opening sequence starts with showing the production company logos which produced the films: ‘DreamWorks’, ‘MTV music Films’ and ‘Red Hour Films’. The shot then transitions to a black screen where non- diegetic music begins to play ‘Say Good Bye’ where white block text appears in the centre of the screen stating the production company names again. The shot then changes with the non- diegetic music continuing where an establishing shot of a snow field or playground is revealed where also the institutional details begin to show. The text used for the institutional details is a black, bold, block text this stands out against the white background and gives it a contrast, the text also has a white mist effect shown slightly around the edges giving it a outline this matches the them of winter and snow. As the shot changes with the camera starting to zoom in downwards, showing the ground, the title to the film is then revealed in the same black block text with the white mist as an outline used for the institutional details. As the title is revealed with a little boy ice-skating underneath it alone, as he is isolated from other people this suggest to the audience that he is the main character and also as the main character is ice-skating , this also suggests that the film is going to be based around figure skating which relates to the snow background. As the institutional details continues, the camera reveals a long shot of building with lots of children and nuns walking around. This long shot gives the audience the impression that the little boy previously seen ice-skating attends this school, this automatically makes the audience assume that he is going to be a well educated, religious, polite young boy as he is being taught at a school run by nuns. This also lets the audience assume that he is going to be a very rich, well off young boy as he attends a school like this which usually only rich children attend. The shot then transitions fast forwarding in time revealing the young man skating at what looks to be a championship computation, this lets the audience know that the film is going to be sports computation related at a professional level.c

Seven Pounds:

Seven Pounds Opening sequence starts with showing the production company logos which produced the films: ‘Columbia Pictures’ and ‘Escape Artists’. The shot then transitions to a black screen where non- diegetic music from a piano starts to play, as the slow tempo melody, this gives the impression that the film is going to be sad and dramatic, also a voice over starts to play of a man sounding distressed heavily breathing, this adds the tension to the audience. The shot then reveals text which again states the production companies for the film, the text used is a bold, block font which is small and centred in the middle of the screen. The colour of the font is red and white, the colour red connotates blood and danger, this gives the audience the impression that something bad is going to happening in the film, also because the background music is sad and dramatic, this also gives the audience a hint that the bad thing that is going to happen in the film is very sad and emotional and is going to leave an effect on many people. The colour red also connoates love, this means that somewhere along the film the character is going to find love and romance, and also due to the sad dramatic music, this gives the audience the impression that the love the main character is not going to last, and is going to end in sadness and heartbreak. However, the other half of the text is written in white, the connatations for white is purity, innocence and peace, this gives the audience the impression that the bad thing in the film is not going to be anyone's fault, and maybe that it was an accident ant the person is sorry for what has happened and wants peace. The shot then reveals a short scene of the main character reporting his suicide to the police on a telephone, this gives a shock to the audience, before the audience can see what happened the shot is then transitioned to a black screen where it then goes back in time this is shown with the use of using a long angle long shot of the character swimming in the sea from underneath, this is also where a narrative voice over of the character begins to talk and explain what is going on. The shot then next reveals a short scene of the main character having a argument with another character on the phone, shortly afterwards the shot transitions to reveal the title to the film. A series of papers with names crossed out appear on the screen followed by a number of newspaper articles being shown in fast-paced shots. As the articles include the names crossed out shown before and are shown in a fast way adding to the tension, this gives the audience impression that a crime or accidence has happened, and as a road is then next shown in fast-paced cuts, this gives the audience the impression that there was a road accident. The title to the film is then revealed in font that appears to be looked as if it has been sketched out.

Hannah Montana Moive Opening sequence starts with showing the production company logo for the movie with is ‘Walt Disney Pictures’ this automatically lets the audience know that the film is going to be a child friendly film as Disney is famously know for its animation films. The shot then transitions to reveal a long shot of a stadium with loads of people running and screaming, this gives the audience the impression that the film is going to be based around a famous person, and as the stadium doesn’t look like a football stadium and the people outside aren’t wearing football kits, this leaves the audience the impression that the famous person the film is based around is a singer. The shot then continues revealing the institutional details at the bottom of the screen as a screen is shown of two girls driving a golf cart away from security guards, this gives the audience the impression that the two girls being shown is the main characters and also that the film is going to be an action adventure as the first scene shows drama and action, it also shows that the film is going to contain humour as they are using a golf cart to escape from inside a building down narrow corridors and golf carts are usually slow. It also shows the girls having fun which suggest to the audience that the film is going to be exciting and friend which is suitable for its target audience which is children. The text used for the institutional details is white and block text, this doesn’t draw much attention to it which gives the idea that it is not as important as the scene it is being shown on to. The title to the film is then revealed with the name shinning bright on the screen and revealed as the light fades out and the song ‘Best Of Both Worlds- Hannah Montana’ begins to pay which is non- diegetic . The title is also written on a night star sky, this gives the impression that the main character is a big super star as her name is ‘written in the stars’ and also she is very glamorous and bright as her name is written in bright lights and its shines. As the name is written in bright shiny stars, this gives the impression that the film is focused on a female audience as the young girl target audience can look up and inspire to the main character as she is supposedly a famous singer and she is very glamorous which is what most young girls dream of being.

St. Trinians Opening sequence starts with showing the production company logo for the movie with is ‘Entertainment Film Distributions’ and ‘UK Film Council’, as the second logo is revealed on the screen, a high temp electric keyboard beat is then played. This gives the impression that the film is gong to be a action, funny adventure film. The shot then transitions revealing then institutional details on a bright pink background, this suggests that the main character in the film is going to be a girl and also that the target audience for the film is going to be females. The text used for the institutional details is a black, block serief , as it is centred in the middle of the screen and in a thick black font, this makes the text strand out from the background letting the audience know it is important. The shot then moves upwards revealing the title to the film, it is written in the same text used for the instiutional details however it is much bigger and bolder, this informs the audience that it is important and the name of the film. As the title has a little sign located underneath saying ‘old school’ with a hat, this suggests to the audience that the film is going to be based on education and maybe the setting for the film is going to be in a school. However as the sign next to the title says ‘beware’ this contrasts the idea of a nice, polite, posh educating school and suggests that it is a school full of bad students attending it which gives the school a reputation and a bad character.

Zombie Land:

Zombie Land Opening sequence starts with showing a shot live-action scene where a narrative voice over begins to speak telling the audience the story line and the situation the narrator is currently in and informing the audience on survival guide to how to live in the area he lives in, this signalises to the audience that the narrator is the main character and the film is going to evolve around him. The shot then transitions with a fade effect revealing the institutional details which then reveal the production company to the film ‘Columbia Pictures’ which is revealed on a slow motion, low angle shot of a man being thrown off an open stair case, this gives the audience the impression that the film is going to be an action film and also it could be a comedy to some viewers as the person falling as been slowen down where you can see him exaggerating his falling. The institutional details then goes on to reveal a second production company logo ‘Relativity Media’, the font for the text used for both production names is a dark red, this dark red colour connotates blood and horror, this gives a hint to the audience that the film is going to contain a lot of blood and guts. Also, the second production name is shown on a slow motion, medium shot of a zombie character spitting out blood, this tells the audience that film is going to contain a lot go blood and gore and also it can relate back to the comedy side as it is slowed down for which exaggerates the spitting of the blood which can be seen funny to a certain age range audience. As the institutional details reveal the actors names, in the same red font style as the production names, the words transition being moved in slow motion as the zombies move pushing them in slow motion with them, this shot also shows the audience that the film is based on zombies attacking the world as you can see a group of zombies attacking a normal man. The title to the film is revealed in the same red font used for the institutional detail which connotates blood and horror. The title is then broke apart as a man smashes his way through glass, the title grumbles with the glass. This gives the audience the impression that the normal people are fighting for their lives, and that there is a war between the zombies and the humans, this brings back the theme of action.

Shaun Of The Dead:

Shaun Of The Dead Opening sequence starts with showing a shot live-action scene of a main pushing a stack of trolleys through a car park and non- diegetic happy music begins to play. As the man is isolated from other people, this tells the audience that this is the main character of the film, it also shows us from his costume that he works for a supermarket company which gives the impression that he’s not a highly educated, well-off man. The institutional details are also revealed on this shot located at the bottom of the screen in white bold text which is clear and easy to read, it informs us on the production companies of the film: ‘Universal Pictures Studiocanal ’, ‘Working Title Films’, ‘WT² Productions’ and ‘Big Talk Productions’. The title to the film is then revealed as the camera moves in slow on a camera dolly track, this shows the audience a revealing shot of all the character’s shown above the title and also it shows the audience that scene behind the title too. Above the title is zombie like characters which seem to appear to be dancing and walking in the same time to each other, this is a contrast to what zombies are usually stereotyped to do which is to be walking slowly in a handicap style trying to eat people. As they seem to be dancing in sync this gives the audience the impression that the film is going to be a comedy as the zombies are trying to made to look friendly and make people laugh. The title to the film is written in a white bold block text and is stretched out and placed on the floor underneath the zombies, the title blends in with the litter on the floor, this gives the impression that the title was created to not stand out as much compared to other titles of films.

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging:

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging Opening sequence starts with showing the production company logos which produced the films: ‘Paramount’ and ‘Nickelodeon Movies’, as the second logo appears non- diegetic theme music of bells starts to play a happy tune in the background, this gives the audience the impression that the film is going to be happy and funny. The shot then changes showing a live-action scene with the non- diegetic tune still playing in the background of the scene, the institutional details then start to show located at the bottom of the shot in a white font sans- serief font. The title to the film is then revealed as a girl is running down the street and non- deiegtic music begins to play over her running ‘She’s So Lovely – Scouting For Girls’, as she is isolated from other people and the camera is focused on her running, this tells the audience that she is the main character in the film and that we should be focused on her. As the young girl is a teenager, the target audience is presumed to be aimed at teenagers, this can also be presumed by the title. As the main character is dressed up in a large fancy dress costume running down the middle of her town street in day light, this lets the audience know that the film is going to be a comedy. The font used for the title is white and bold, the text is also wrote in a large font taking up one side of the screen leaving the character to look small on the other side of the screen, this shows the audience that the title is important and should stand out compared to the background of the scene. The camera shot the changes zooming into a medium shot of the main character running where the audience can understand her emotion and how she is feeling to understand what is gong to happen in the film, the institutional details are shown in the bottom half of the screen still using the same white, bold font style seen previously for the title and the production company names. The institutional details carry on revealing that the main character is a typical serotype teenager having tantrums and taking her anger out on things, this shows the audience that the main character is vulnerable and emotional and gets upset easily, it also gives them an understanding of what her personality is going to be like for the film.
