Opening Sequences Research By Francesca Knight

SPIDERMAN:

S PIDERMAN Opening sequence starts with the company Marvel Comic logo, this is because the movie is based on the comics ‘The amazing spider-man’ written by Marvel and they are also the production company to this movie. The music begins from when the logo starts to appear on the screen and as the screen transitions to the institutional details the music start speed up which connotates that this is a fast-paced film. The institutional details transition with the use of computer-generated imagery (‘CGI’), the text then suddenly breaks apart like it is floating away. The camera then moves along to reveal multitudes of web. As the camera turns a reveal more and more webs the title to the film is then revealed on a web also. The title then appears to start glowing, this gives of the effect that the name is important and should be remembered. The camera transition from the scene then zooms in to black with letters flying around that then get stuck on a web revealing the name of the casts staring in the production name by name. The institutional details then shows a web inside a blood vessel which indicates that there is going to be a bodily change in the body in the film. Next, the institutional details shows us webs inside the DNA strands, this gives us an idea that the change is going in the body is going to be something to do with spiders. It then goes on to show a CGI arm break through the webs, this gives us the impression that the character is going to be muscling and manly . I t then also goes on the show a close up shot of a CGI hand reaching through the web this shows us that that the character is comfortable with spiders and webs. Next it shows a close up shot of a CGI characters chest covered in webs, this gives us the impression that they are at home with the spiders and could possible consider himself as one as his clothes are covered in spider webs. The next shot is close up shot of the CGI characters back and the camera moves up the back to revel the back of the characters head. This gives off the impression that the character is mysterious as we didn’t see the front of his face, it also shows us a spider symbol on the back of his clothing giving us a clue that he considers himself to be a spider.

X-Men:

X-Men The opening sequence starts with the ’20 th Century Fox’ logo, this means that the film was produced by this company. The next shot is of a black screen where a voice over narrator of the character ‘Professor Xavier’ played by Patrick Stewart explaining to us scientific factors about evolution. As he goes on the explain, five computer-generated imagery (CGI) bright white lights appear from the blackness and begin to slowly move around the screen in circular motions where they collide coursing a bright light as to where the camera zooms into starting the intuitional detail. The shot from the CGI bright lights translates to show us strands of CGI DNA, As the camera carries on moving forward inside the DNA moving up and down the strands, it reveals more CGI cells and CGI tissue strands located in the body, this gives us an impression that the film is going to be based around science and something to due with people’s DNA strands and maybe a there is going to be a change to physical change to people’s DNA strands in the film. The institutional detail then uses CGI effect on the text to make it appear in a wipe effect, the text is a bold in a block text which is easy for the audience to read and understand. As the camera shot continues to move forwards, as if its going deeper inside the body, the camera reveals CGI neurones and cells, this intensifies the film theme to be SFI. As the shot continues to move, another CGI bright white light is reveal which suddenly explodes uncovering the title to the movie. The font used for the title of the film is again block text and it is bold and easy to read, however unlike the previous text used in the institutional detail which was white, the movie title is black. Black font for the title connotes that there could be something dark in the film. As the film is based on science, this could be giving clues to the viewers that there could be some sort of dark science in the film, however this could be a contrast to the film as the audience might expect the film to be dark science when it could be misunderstood. Behind the title of the film looks like to be a CGI nucleolus this could be that surrounding the title and the ‘nucleolus’ could be cytoplasm which means that the title is located inside a cell. As the camera shot has ended up in a cell the title of the film is placed inside there highlighting that this is and important feature to the film, this could give of the impression that the film is based on new life, or however a new type of species which links back to the narrative voice over of evolution and science which gives off clues about what the film could lead into and also be about.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The opening sequence starts with the production company logo of ‘Warner Bro. Pictures’ which informs the audience which company produced the film which is accompanied by a second production company logo ‘Legendary Pictures’, which is shortly followed by a third production company ‘Green Hats Films’. As the shot for the green hat films appears on the screen, calming relaxing music starts to play in the background. The shot then transitions to an establishing shot of a beautiful, calm sea which also looks tropical which adds to the relaxing effect as well as the relaxing music in the background. The institutional details uses a fancy delicate font that adds to the relaxing effect, the font is also easy to read and understand. The camera continues to reveal establishing shots to show a beautiful, peaceful hotel which sets the scene for the movie, supposedly suggested to the audience. The shot then transitions into a short scene explaining the situation of the film which helps the audience to understand what’s happening. Suddenly the music changes to ‘Glenn Danzig – Black Hell’ where the camera points to the clouds and the shot transitions to a white background with red font revealing the title to the film. The font is a block red bold which stands out on the white background and is easy for the audience to read. As the font colour is red, the connotations of red is blood and danger which gives off the impression that something bad has happened in the film which we are yet to find out about. The red contrasts with the white background as the connotations for white is innocence and purity. The red also contrasts with the opening sequence to the film as it begun with calm relaxing music with relaxing scenes and it has now been twisted around to a danger feeling. The red font compliments the new background music as the music sounds dark and glooming and gives off the impression that something bad has happened just by the tone of the singers voice and the music beat he is singing to. The camera then goes on to reveal a series of establishing shots to help set the new scene for the film which contrasts to the pervious relaxing shots shown at the beginning as the new shots show a dirty, dark place. The institutional details show each name of the characters individually as each different establishing shot is shown in the sequence. The font is again a white capitalised font which is easy to read and stands out from the background of the pictures. Hangover part 2

PowerPoint Presentation:

The opening sequence starts with showing the production company of the film which is ‘Focus Features International’, it then goes to show a second production company ‘Random House Films’, which is accompanies shortly after with a third ‘4 films’ where a simple, plain and relaxing music begins to play in the background. The sequence starts with a real life action shot of a woman swimming in a pool, because there are no other people in the centre of the shot and she is isolated from other characters, this shows us that she is the main character in the film. The institutional details are then transitioned onto the shots of the swimmer as it faded quickly into sight. The font used is a white bold block text, it is easy to read and understand. The white font connotes innocence and purity which compliments the film well as it is a romantic genre. As the short real life action shot finishes, the camera quickly fades into a flash back from the past where the music begins to pick up playing a soothing passing music which is calming, relaxing and romantic. The camera shots shows a series of establishing shots to help set the scene and explain where the story is set, as the establishing shots show the institutional details transition in an appear effect revealing the cast names of the characters. The font used is a fancy, bold style which looks as if a posh writer has written them, it goes well with the theme of the film as the font itself looks romantic and elegant. The colour of the font is white which has connotations of freedom, innocents and purity which also compliments the film genre. The film title is the transitioned onto the screen in the same appear effect but it is placed onto a establishing shot of a high level shot of a city. The city looks as if it is an old, romantic town, this compliments the film well because it gives off a romantic setting to the audience and it also places well to the genre of the film. One day

She’s The Man:

She’s The Man The opening sequence starts with a ‘DreamWorks’ logo, this shows that the film is a DreamWorks produced movie, after there is different shot of another production company ‘Lakeshore Entertainment’ that helped produce the film. The next shot is of a black screen where upbeat happy music starts to play, this gives off the impression that the film is going to be a happy, funny summer film. The opening song is The Faders-No Sleep Tonight, t his is a young people’s song, this connotes as the characters being young and peppy enjoying the summer having a good time as which teenagers do. The next shot is of the institutional details that transition in by appearing one by one from the side in a abstract art way. The font of the institutional details is bock text which is bold and easy for audience to read and understand. The institutional detail then transitions in a water splash effect revealing a real life action shot of people doing various sports, this shows us that the film is going to be based on some kind of sport. The shot then transitions back to a abstract cartoon background showing one girl playing football, because the girl is highlighted and isolated from the rest of the people playing football this tells us that she is the main character and the film is going to be based around her playing football, the shot then changes leaving only the football that the girl was previously playing with and an actors name in a bold black font, this highlights the fact that she is the main character. The shot then transitions again revealing the girl and the football and also reveals the title to the film, this informs the audience that she is the main character and the film is football based. Also as the film title is ‘she’s the man’ it is a contrast to the female character’s stereotype presuming the film is going to be a girly chick-flick and states that she is ‘the man’ which boys are presumed to be, this grabs the audiences attention and makes them want to watch the film to understand the pun stated in the film title. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0vOj-Suj0o

Super Bad:

Super Bad The opening sequence starts with a black screen as funky 60’s music starts to play in the background, then the production company starts to show on the screen which is ‘Sony Pictures Entertainment’ it then goes on to show a second production company ‘Columbia Pictures’ . The institutional details start to appear as the as the production logo starts to faded with the 60’s music continuing playing. Continuing the 60’s theme, CGI colourful outlines of men start to appear on the screen of frozen images of people dancing. The CGI images of the men then disappear leaving one CGI image of a blue man, the image then starts to dance, as the CGI character carries on dancing, the title to the film the appears in the bottom right of the screen. The screen then transitions with a star changing the colour of the background. The star goes with the theme of the 60’s institutional details as stars where a popular sign in the 60’s as they always used them to transition things. The shot then changes to a green background where a new CGI character then appears zooming in which then also starts to dance which then one by one four clones of the character then join in with the dance. Then screen then transitions using slide upwards to revel a new shot with a dark blue background with both the two CGI characters both dancing together. As both the CGI characters have both reappeared but this time together, this gives off the impression that the two characters dancing are the main characters in the film, and because they are dancing together they have a good friendship. The shot the careers on the show the two characters dancing, it then goes to show a mirror image of the two dancing with the colours overlapping each other. The shot then transitions to a burgundy coloured background with the CGI character dancing mirror image still continuing. As the shot goes to change the use of stars to transition is then used again to go with the 60’s music theme. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlX_O4s67Dk

PowerPoint Presentation:

The opening sequence starts after 7 minutes into the film as it is a narrative voice over real life action shots of the main character explaining his life and explaining his views on certain characters in the film and also explains the situation he is in to set the film. The institutional details start as real life action shots with the main character, his mum and her boyfriend driving along in a car with the institutional details appearing in a white block print font. The camera then points up to the sky where it then evolves into a cartoon, fantasy life where the title to the film is revealed in a bold text. As the camera fades from real life into a cartoon, fantasy life in the main characters life which happens to be a teenager, this gives the impression that the film is going to be aimed at teenagers for the films target audience. As the institutional detail continues the clay characters continue to move along the road, the family car cuts a corner hitting a curb, this gives of the impression at the film is going to be a comedy and even possible have some action in the film. The shot then goes on to show us and establishing camera shot where the scene if very green with lots of trees around, this tells us that the family are going on a trip as the first shot of them leaving there house showed loads of houses around with hardly any greenery, this gives the impression that the main character could be out of his comfort zoon and in a new environment as the shot goes on to how him looking interested out of the car. The shot then goes on to show us two birds loved up. As the camera shows us a medium shot of the love birds this tells us that in the film it is going to contain romance which gives us a hint that the main character is going to meet a girl and fall in love. Cinderella Story:

Cinderella Story The opening sequence starts with showing the production company of the film which is ‘Warner Bro. Pictures’ as the logo is showed on the screen a fairy tale/fantasy music starts to play giving of f the impression that the film is going to be a girly fairy tale theme. The camera then goes on to show a blurred floor-like shot which then rises to reveal snowy mountains, this adds to the fantasy theme. The camera then continues to move showing an establishing shot of a castle, which also helps support the idea of a fairy tale theme, the title of the film is then revealed in a elegant font in which is thought to how a princess would write in an elegant style. As the castle shot appears, a female voice over narrator starts to talk which is suggested to be the main character of the film. The shot then zooms out to reveal a real life action shot of two characters, a little girl and her father, looking into a snow globe containing the castle that was previously seen in the last shot, this suggests that the film is not going to be like any other fairy tale ‘Disney’ film. The shot then moves at 180 degree angle to reveal an establishing shot of the town that the film is going to be set in. The shot then transitions into a series of action shots of the little girl and her father to get an understanding of their lives and their relationship together. Whilst theses shots are taking place, the narrative voice is talking over explaining a little about her childhood and her friendship with her dad, the institutional details appear with every different action shot scene shows, the font used for the institutional details is in the elegant style with a pink colour, this still gives the impression that the film is going to be a girly, fairy tale theme. The shots then go on to show us that the little girl and her dad have a very close relationship and this gives an idea that the film is going to have links to do with her relationship with her father.

Boy In The Stripped Pyjamas :

The opening sequence starts with showing the production company logo ‘Miramax Films’ the screen then fades to black where a soft music starts to play where a second production company is revealed ‘Heyday Films’. After the shot of the company logo fades, the music starts to become more daunting and loud, this adds effect and gives an impression that the film is going to be emotional and sad. A quote then appears on the screen, as the quote is singled out on a black screen with white clear font, this stands out to the audience and shows that the words are important and should be thought about during the film. The title of the film is then reveal with the haunting orchestral music playing in the background, the title is shown on a deep red background which connotes for blood and danger, this gives a hint that something bad is going to happen during the film. The institutional details are then shown on the same red background in the same white font as the title, however as the institutional details continue to show, the red camera shot then moves upwards in the background to reveal the red background to be a Nazi flag this lets the audience know that the film is going the based in Germany around 1919-1923 the time Hitler took over Germany. After the flag is revealed, the shot changes to reveal an establishing live action shot of a town based in 1919, this helps the audience understand where the film is set, the shot then zooms down focusing on a small group of boys running pretending to be planes, gives us a clue that the film is based on a life of a little boy and also that it is set in the time of war. Titanic:

The opening sequence starts with a black screen where non- diegetic music starts to play. The music starting to play is a humming, choir version of the song ‘My Heart Will Go On’ by Celine Deon which is famously known for being the theme song to the film. The shot then goes on to reveal real life action shot footage of when the boat Titanic was launched in 1912, this helps the audience of the film understand that the film is based on a true event and also shows the audience what the boat looked like in real life and helps them understand how people dress and what they looked like in the time of where the film is set. The camera details of the real life footage used is a dull, sepia effect colour which tells us the film is based on a long time ago and the technology equipment back then was not as high in technology as it is today. This shows us that the a big ship back in 1912 was considered a big thing, this helps explain that the events shown on the footage was an exciting moment for them people which adds to the sympathy given from the audience to the characters in the film . The institutional details are then shown over the real life footage, the font is white and is a bold clear font. The institutional details reveal two production company names which made the film which are ‘Paramount Pictures’ and ‘Twentieth Century Fox’. After the institutional details have finished and the real life footage action shots have finished showing, the shot then changes to show a moon reflection on the sea where the title to the film is revealed in bold white text. The connotations for white is innocence, this makes us empathise the people on the boat as they ware all innocent in the distasted shown in the film. Titanic
