Signs of a Bad Oil Filter in Your Car

The oil filter helps to remove contaminants from your car engine’s oil that can accumulate over time as the oil keeps your engine clean.

It is a device which is typically about the size of a tin of baked beans, which is absolutely crucial to the smooth running of your engine.

Clean engine oil is important because if the oil were left unfiltered for a period of time, it could become saturated with tiny, hard particles that can wear surfaces in your engine.

The filter’s job is to remove all impurities or contaminating bodies from your engine oil as dirty oil can wear the oil pump’s machined components.

Let us discuss some of the frequently observed signs of a bad oil filter in your car.

Low performance

If there is low performance, the car will not pick up speed as much as it should and the accelerator will feel like it is not working properly.

Driving on this low level of performance for a long period of time may damage essential parts of the car.

Metallic sounds

The metallic sounds coming from the engine are a sign that you must pull over immediately before more damage is done to your car.

A lack of oil in the engine will cause the metal to grind against metal as the engine works and you need to get the oil filter repaired, as well as add more oil into the system.

Sputtering in your car is most likely related to a clogged oil filter and even if it looks small, it could lead to a much bigger problem.

When this happens, the oil filter will not release oil as it should and your car will not be able to keep up with the speed that you want.

Dirty exhaust

When your oil filter is clogged, the exhaust coming out of your car could be black or dirty and you will smell the oil burning as it passes into the exhaust pipe.

These odors are a clear sign that you must bring the car into a garage in order to fix the clog in the oil system and remove any sludge that has made its way into the car.

Drop in pressure

You can actually read the oil pressure gauge on the dash while you are driving when you have a steep drop in oil pressure.

Generally, your oil pressure will not drop more than a fraction of a percent while you are driving and rapid pressure changes could cause serious problems for your car.
