Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa by area, and the 17th largest in the world The Capital (Tripoli) : The Capital (Tripoli) Tripoli is the largest and the capital city of Libya. The city is located in the Northwest of the country. It was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named it (Oea). Tripoli : Tripoli The climate is typical Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers, cool winters and some modest rainfall Tripoli has a population of 1.69 million. It is Libya's economic hub. History of Libya : History of Libya The area known in modern times as Libya was later occupied by a series of peoples, with the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks,and Romans, Phoenicians : Phoenicians Phoenicians found libya in the 7th century BC,and they named it Oea Oea(Tripoli), Libdah (Leptis Magna) and Sabratha. All these were in an area that was later called Tripolis, or "Three Cities". Greeks : Greeks The Greeks conquered Eastern Libya. In 630 BC, they founded the city of Cyrene Within 200 years, four more important Greek cities were established in the area known as Pentapolis (Five Cities). Romans : Romans The Romans unified all three regions of Libya For more than 600 years Tripolitania and Cyrenaica became prosperous Roman provinces. Ottoman turks : Ottoman turks The Ottoman Turks conquered the country in the mid-16th century. the three States of Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan remained part of their empire. Italian Colony : Italian Colony From 1912 to 1927, the territory of Libya was known as Italian North Africa. On December 24, 1951, Libya declared its independence as the United Kingdom of Libya. Leptis magna : Leptis magna It was a prominent city of the Roman Empire. Located in Al Khums, Libya, 130 km east of Tripoli, on the coast. The site is one of the most spectacular and unspoiled Roman ruins in the Mediterranean. Sabratha : Sabratha It was the westernmost of the "three cities" of Tripolis. It lies on the Mediterranean coast about 65km (40 miles) west of Tripoli. The extant archaeological site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 Cyrene : Cyrene Cyrene was founded in 630 BC as a colony of the Greeks. the oldest and most important of the five Greek cities in the region. Libyan desert : Libyan desert Is an African desert that is located in the northern and eastern part of the Sahara Desert. Covering an area of approximately 1,100,000 square kilometers. There is at least 11 lakes. Gabrown lake : Gabrown lake Located on the heart of sahara. It is watered by the water table the goleé year. the largest of the lakes, 250 M by 300 M It is very salty. Umm al-ma lake : Umm al-ma lake The name means (the mother of water). For me it is the most beautiful lake in Libya. The Acacus mountain : The Acacus mountain Located on the south of libya,they are famous of two reasons. The first is the stunning mountain formations that meet the blue sky and the orange sand dunes. Acacus : Acacus The second are the great collection of rock art, both paintings and carvings. Acacus : Acacus An expedition around the Acacus takes 4-5 days , and can only be explored by 4WD or camels. The Acacus Mountains stretch for almost 100 km north to south. The natural art : The natural art The Natural Arch, about 150 metres high, is the largest of its kind in the Acacus.
