Geothermal Energy:

Geothermal Energy Meggian Kim Tara

definition:

definition “Geo – earth, thermal – energy.” “Energy generated from heat stored in the earth or the collection of absorbed heat derived from underground.” -clean energy usa

How does it work?:

How does it work? Today we harvest geothermal energy, and use it in a lot of different ways. We can generate electricity, hot water, and energy. The most visible and natural geothermal energy are geysers. There are two main forms of geothermal energy classified – direct such as heating houses and buildings and indirect- like generating electricity that runs to houses.

Geysers/hot springs:

Geysers/hot springs Naturally found Made by the earths heat under the ground heating the water, which expands it and since it has no where else to go, it explodes up used to be used for cooking, bathing, etc.

Geothermal power plants (binary cycle power plants):

Geothermal power plants (binary cycle power plants) Hot water – almost steam, from below the earths surface is pumped through huge mechanical pipes that drill through the earth. The hot water and steam is carried back up to the plant where the steam goes through turbines that make it generate electricity. The hot water is still pure, and can be let out to run into the water sources around it.

Iceland has the most effective and resourceful geothermal power plant in the world.:

Iceland has the most effective and resourceful geothermal power plant in the world.

Iceland's “geothermal spa”:

Iceland's “geothermal spa” Along with generating electricity to more than half of Iceland within one plant – they also purify the water around the area.

Geothermal heat pumps:

Geothermal heat pumps A direct source of energy. Use the constant temperature of the earth instead of the outside air Below the surface of the earth (about 30 ft) the temp of the earth is constant, so by running pipes underground that lead back to your house - it can regulate. It can heat your house in the winter and cool it in the summer, with no energy cost or side effects to the environment

Advantages of geothermal energy:

Advantages of geothermal energy Are less expensive than building other plants No fuel is needed to run the plant Clean, cheap, simple, and renewable No fuel is used to generate the power, which in return, means the running costs for the plants are very low as there are no costs for purchasing, transporting, or cleaning up of fuels you may consider purchasing to generate the power.

Disadvantages of geothermal energy:

Disadvantages of geothermal energy Geothermal heat is extracted from deep within the earths surface, and this is the main disadvantage concerning finding a suitable build location Takes a long time to do a land survey A lot of questions of where to put a plant Gases can leak out of the plant and this can be very harmful
