The Grapes of Wrath is the story of the experiences of the Joad family from the time of their eviction from a farm near Sallisaw, Oklahoma to their first winter in California.

The original novel has thirty chapters, fourteen of which deal with the Joad story. The other sixteen chapters, called interchapters, are not part of the narrative about the Joads. They are essays dealing with the situation in which the Joads find themselves.

The opening chapter deals with the drought in Oklahoma and describes the dust storm and its effect on the people. We meet Tom Joad . He hitchhikes home.He has just spent four years in an Oklahoma state prison, for killing a man and he has been released on parole.

John Steinbeck - BIOGRAPHY : 

John Steinbeck - BIOGRAPHY John Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California. He set many of his novels in and around Salinas, California, including Tortilla Flat, In Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and Cannery Row. After leaving Salinas High School in 1919, Steinbeck studied at Stanford University from 1920 to1925, but never completed a degree. After leaving the University, he worked at a variety of jobs. Between 1925 and 1927 he worked as a reporter and a free-lance writer.

The Great depressIon : 

The Great depressIon It was a severe worldwide economic crisis in the decade preceding World War II . It was the longest, most widespread, and deepest depression of the 20th century. It started with the crash of the stock market on October 29, 1929 (known asBlack Tuesday), but quickly spread to almost every country in the world.

THE DUST BOWL The Dust Bowl or the Dirty Thirties was a period of severe dust storms causing major ecological and agricultural damage. The phenomenon was caused by severe because of extensive farming. It was an ecological and human disaster caused by misuse of land and years.

Slide 9: 

Millions of acres of farmland became useless, and hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes; many of these families (often known as "Okies", because many of them were from Oklahoma) traveled to California and other states, where they found economic conditions little better than those they had left. Owning no land, many traveled from farm to farm picking fruit and other crops at starvation wages.
