Worth to note …….. This presentation is not meant to scare people nor make them anxious, but basically to explain the various infections and diseases that destroy the body’s defense systems and also offer advice on how to check our lifestyle so as to avoid such debilitating diseases.

What are STD’s and STI’s? : 

What are STD’s and STI’s? A sexually transmitted disease (STD), also known as sexually transmitted infection (STI) or venereal disease (VD), is an illness that has a significant probability of transmission between humans or animals by means of human sexual behavior, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex Though the terms STI and STD are used interchangeably, they are somewhat different, so it would be helpful to understand the difference between infection and disease. Infection simply means that a germ—virus, bacteria, or parasite—that can cause disease or sickness is present inside a person’s body. A disease means that the infection is actually causing the infected person to feel sick, or to notice something is wrong. Studies shows that anal sex is the riskiest of sexual acts since the tissues of the anus tears easily.

Some forms of STD’s and STI’s : 

Some forms of STD’s and STI’s AIDS (Acquired Immune-deficiency syndrome) Syphilis Gonorrhea Chlamydia Etc That notwithstanding, serious attention would be paid to AIDS, syphilis, and Gonorrhea.

AIDS : 

AIDS First reported in Ghana in 1986. By the end of June 2005, cumulative total reported cases were 290,000. AIDS stands for; Acquired which means you were not born with the disease compared to most immune deficient conditions *You can only be born with AIDS if your mother had AIDS when pregnant.

AIDS : 

AIDS Immunodeficiency which means the disease is characterized by a weakened or ineffective immune system with no resistance to infections. Syndrome which means AIDS is a combination of signs and symptoms which occur together due to the HIV infection as well as many other infections as a result of the immunodeficiency

AIDS : 

AIDS It appears that the disease can only be transmitted through several methods (means) which includes; Unprotected sex (anal sex, oral sex, and vaginal sex). About 75% of the world’s HIV transmission is by sexual means Sharing of unsterilised needles, blades, syringes and other sharp instruments. Infected mothers to their children. Also, people who are infected with other STD’s like gonorrhea, syphilis, etc stand the risk of getting the disease.

AIDS : 

AIDS Basically, the disease can be spread through blood blood products (Blood transfusion) sexual fluids

SYMPTOMS OF AIDS : 

SYMPTOMS OF AIDS abdominal cramps  coma  coughing  difficult or painful swallowing extreme fatigue   fever mental symptoms such as confusion and forgetfulness     mouth ulcers in the genital region nausea pelvic inflammatory disease   persistent or frequent yeast infections (oral or vaginal) persistent skin rashes or flaky skin seizures  severe and persistent diarrhea  severe headaches

SYMPTOMS OF AIDS : 

SYMPTOMS OF AIDS shortness of breath  sore throat sweats   swollen lymph glands  weight loss  vision loss     vomiting  anal sores genital sores mouth sores Shingles, a painful nerve disease sore throat

Syphilis : 

Syphilis Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the spirochetal bacterium Treponema pallidum. (displayed at the left corner) The route of transmission of syphilis is almost always through sexual contact although there are exceptions. An estimated 12.22 million cases of syphilis occurred worldwide in 1999.

Gonorrhoea : 

Gonorrhoea Gonorrhea (also gonorrhoea) is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae (also called Gonococcus, which is often abbreviated as "GC" by clinicians. An estimated 62.35 million cases of gonorrhea occurred in 1999, affecting more women than men. Its medium of transmission is same as that of AIDS – blood, sexual fluids, and blood products.

Symptoms of gonorrhoea : 

Symptoms of gonorrhoea It is vital to indicate that the incubation period is 2 to 30[4] days with most symptoms occurring between 4–6 days after being infected. Its symptoms are as follows; vaginal discharge, difficulty urinating, off-cycle menstrual bleeding, or bleeding after sexual intercourse especially in women.

Symptoms of gonorrhoea : 

Symptoms of gonorrhoea Women are very sensitive to this particular disease; Statistics indicates that Men have a 20% risk of getting the infection from a single act of vaginal intercourse with a woman infected with gonorrhea. Women have a 60-80% risk of getting the infection from a single act of vaginal intercourse with a man infected with gonorrhea

Precautions : 

Precautions Abstinence is the best option to singles. Avoid unprotected sex, use latex condom. Avoid sharing of sharp and piercing instruments – blades, etc. Have an HIV/AIDS test with a potential partner before sexual encounter.

One cannot get STD’s through … : 

One cannot get STD’s through … Hugging Sharing of cooking utensils handshake. Living in the same house. Using the same bath house. Eating together. Etc Moreover, we have to show compassion to people living with the disease and should not maltreat and alienate them.

Treatment : 

Treatment Through anti-biotics; Amoxicillin Ampicillin Azithromycin Cefixime Cefotaxime Vaccines

FINDING HEALTHY SEXUAL VALUES Know yourself and work towards acceptance of your sexual needs and orientations. Make sure you are not bound by popular sexual standards which you are personally uncomfortable with. Examine yourself about religion and find out what your religion has to say about sexual matters. [1 Cor. 6.12-20] Critically examine how your sexual behavior can jeopardize your health and future plans.
