Premium member Presentation Transcript Ohio Memory Project : Ohio Memory Project A Case Study and Evaluation By: Erin Kelsey Goals : Goals Provide access to the historical treasures of Ohio. Bring together primary sources from all over Ohio in an online scrapbook. History : History Conceived by Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board in 1995. Phase 1 2000- Received a $500,000 grant from Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN) to launch phase 1 of project. For two years, more than 1,000 collections from more than 250 institutions were included in the scrapbook. Only items created before 1903 were included during Phase 1 Collections in Phase 1 in a variety of formats History, cont. : History, cont. Phase 2 Completed between October 2002 through September 2003. Supported by Ohio Bicentennial Commission and State Library of Ohio Did not restrict collections created after 1903. The project in the present : The project in the present All cultural heritage repositories are welcomed to submit collections. Three step process Select items/collection for digitization Determine Project Plan and costs From 2000-2005 the project provided the service at no cost. After 2006 there are many pricing options Digitization, Description, and Online Access Publication Scope : Scope Brings together historical materials from archives, museums, libraries, and historical societies. Primary Source Materials both print and three-dimensional. Selection Criteria : Selection Criteria Historical Significance Scanning Potential Complementary Value Ownership and Copyright Metadata : Metadata Offers metadata services to institutions for an extra charge. Also provide Optical Character Recognition Services Provide institutions with a metadata guideline document with mandatory metadata inclusions. File Formats/Media Types : File Formats/Media Types Master file- TIFF Saved at 100% of actual size Uncompressed Files on the web site are JPEG Text, manuscript, and photograph materials scanned in 24 bit depth color. Minimum of 600 DPI for majority of materials. Photographic prints less than 3”x5” require 1200 DPI Scanned images are the only media type but the library is starting to add audio and video. Copyright : Copyright Institution must hold copyright to collection or item Must include signed release by copyright holder if the institution does not have the copyright. Interactive Features : Interactive Features Browse: By author, subject, format, place, or contributor Provide large map of Ohio- user can click county and view available images.
