RUBRIC 4 Exceeding Expectations 3 Meeting Expectations 2 Approaching Expectations 1 Failing to meet Expectations Use of Art Element Work shows an understanding of and mastery in using the art element to tell the story. Work shows an understanding of and proficiency in using the art element to tell the story. Work shows understanding of art element but use of art element to tell the story is incomplete. Work demonstrates a lack of understanding of the element of art and its use to tell the story Use of other Elements of Art All other elements of art are skillfully used and identified. Most other elements of art are skillfully used and identified. Other elements of art may be used but they are not identified. Work is incomplete or other elements of art cannot be identified. Work demonstrates a lack of understanding of the element of art and its use to tell the story Craftsmanship Craftsmanship is clean and adequate. Use of media propels the story forward. Craftsmanship is clean and adequate but choice does not relate directly to story telling. Craftsmanship needs is somewhat sloppy. Work is incomplete and/or messy. Story Sequence Story is inventive and imaginative. Story clear and well sequenced Story is somewhat clear. Story is unclear or incomplete. Overall design of art work. The sequence is well designed and all elements in all artworks relate to and build upon the story and artwork. The sequence is well designed and most elements work together. The sequence is incomplete or the art elements to not work well together. Sequence is incomplete or incoherent.

Students presenting their work:

Students presenting their work Students choose how to present their work. In this case, the story board was designed to be read from top to bottom.

Slide 10:

This group included written text – not a requirement of the assignment.

There were five groups, one for each element of art: Space, Line, Color, Texture, and Shape.:

There were five groups, one for each element of art: Space, Line, Color, Texture, and Shape.

Space:

Space In the “Space” group the narrative is simple, Shelby leaves home, goes for a walk. gets lost in the forest and encounters a storm. Finally, he finds his way back home.

Slide 13:

In this panel the group has shown their understanding of space by making the house small, suggesting distance. Notice the reflection on the sun on the stream.

Line :

Line The “Line” group told the story of Shelby’s surfing adventure.

Slide 21:

The talking beach volleyball helps Shelby find his way home.

Shape:

Shape The “Shape” group wrote a story to go with their story board. Shelby: Oh Butterfly friend, where are you going? Shelby: Hello Turtle! I’m trying to find my Butterfly friend to get back home. Turtle: Well, take your time and follow the yellow brick road and if I find him, I’ll let you know.

Slide 25:

Shelby: Hello inchworm! I’m trying to find my Butterfly friends to get back home. Inchworm: Well, I’ll climb up to the very top of the tree to see what I can see. Oh wait, there he is on a flower behind that tree. Shelby: Hello flower! Where is my butterfly friend going? I’m trying to find him to get back home. Flower: Well, he was getting hungry and wanted to back to his home, but I’m sure you can catch up with him, he didn’t want to be alone. The road and the characters are composed of cut-out shapes.

Slide 26:

Shelby: Oh my butterfly friend I’ve been trying to find you to get back home. Butterfly: Oh, I thought you knew all you had to was click your eyes together 3 times and say, “There’s no place like home.” Shelby: There’s no place like home, There’s no place like home!.. Shelby: …here’s no place like Home!

Color:

Color The “Color” group told a simple narrative of being lost and returning home. Note the use of cellophane to create snail slime.

Texture:

Texture The “Texture” had a somewhat confusing narrative about two snail parents racing home.
