Velocity and Acceleration:

Velocity and Acceleration Velocity - Velocity describes how fast an object is moving. The difference between velocity and speed is that velocity is a vector. For example, if an object first moves 5 meters forward in 1 second and then moves 4 meters backward in 2 second. The speed for the object should be 5ms -1 and 2ms -1 while the velocity for the object is 5ms -1 and -2ms -1 (there is an negative sign ). Moreover , the average speed for the whole journey is 3ms -1 while the average velocity is 0.33ms -1 . So , how to define average velocity? The average velocity is defined as displacement divided by time taken. Instantaneous velocity represent the rate of change of displacement at a particular t ime. We can denote that with the equation ds / dt . Acceleration - Acceleration describes how the velocity is changing. The relationship between acceleration and velocity is like the relationship between velocity and displacement . The average acceleration of an object is defined as PRESENTATION BY:- ANIMESH SHUKLA

Average acceleration = change in velocity / time taken For example, if a car increases its velocity to 30ms -1 from rest in 15 seconds, then the acceleration is 2ms -2 I f the time taken is very small, the average acceleration represents the instantaneous acceleration (acceleration at a particular time) which is defined as the rate of change of velocity . a = dv / dt Acceleration is a vector quantity. For uniform velocity, a = 0. If a is a non-zero constant, the object is said to be uniformly accelerated. PRESENTATION BY:- ANIMESH SHUKLA

Motion Graph :

Motion Graph Motion graphs can tell you how far a body has travelled, how fast it is moving and all the speed changes there have been . Distance - time graph ( s-t graph ) Distance of a body from start point is measured. Case 3 : A car is travelling with decreasing velocity. Case 2 : A car is travelling with increasing velocity. PRESENTATION BY:- ANIMESH SHUKLA

Case 4 : A car is at rest (stationary) In a s-t graph, the velocity at any time is given by the slope of tangent to the graph at the instant. If the speed is uniform, the graph inclined straight line. PRESENTATION BY:- ANIMESH SHUKLA

Acceleration - time graph ( a-t graph ) The a-t graph gives the acceleration of a moving object at different times . Here are 3 examples of a-t graph representing the motion of 3 different cars- Case 1 : From this graph, we know that the speed is increasing and the s-t graph should also be increasing with a concave downward shape PRESENTATION BY:- ANIMESH SHUKLA

Let's see how to interpret it. ab : Increasing acceleration (Velocity increases and the rate is faster and faster). bc : Decreasing acceleration (Velocity still increases but the rate is slower and slower). c d : Increasing deceleration (Velocity decreases and the decreasing rate is faster and faster). de : Decreasing deceleration (Velocity decreases but the decreasing rate is slower and slower).
