What is it? : 

What is it? It is a letter of application that you send with your CV. It is a sales letter. The product it is selling is your CV.

CONTENT : 

CONTENT Do not give unnecessary details. Design your letter to be easy to read. It should be short, concise and relevant. It should not be too formal or complicated. Your letter should: confirm that you are applying for the job say where you learned about the job say why you want the job say why you would be a benefit to the company request an interview

FORMAT : 

FORMAT Here is the typical format for your covering letter: Your Contact Information Your address - telephone - fax - email Put your address and telephone number, fax and/or email address at the top in the centre OR on the right. Date

Employer Contact Information Name Title Company Address City, State, Zip Code Reference Any reference number or code given by the employer in their advertisement or previous letter.

Salutation Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name: Body of Cover Letter lets the employer know what position you are applying for, why the employer should select you for an interview, how you will follow-up

First Paragraph: include information on why you are writing mention position you are applying for Include the name of a mutual contact, if you have one be clear and concise regarding your request convince the reader that they should grant the interview or appointment you request.

Middle Paragraphs: what you have to offer the employer make strong connections between your abilities and their needs mention specifically how your skills and experience match the job you are applying for support your statements with a piece of evidence use several shorter paragraphs or bullets rather than one large block of text.

Slide 9: 

Final Paragraph: Thank the employer for considering you for the position. Include information on how you will follow-up. State that you will do so and indicate when (one week's time is typical). You may want to reduce the time between sending out your resume and follow up if you fax or e-mail it.

Complimentary Close: Respectfully yours, Yours sincerely, Yours faithfully, Yours truly Signature First name, surname and job title (if using company headed paper)

Enclosures Indicate that one or more documents are enclosed by writing "Enc: 2" for two documents, for example.
