Merriam Webster dictionary defines garbage as “food waste, discarded or useless materials .” Where does all that garbage go? How does improper garbage disposal affect society? What can we do to reduce the amount?

Where does all that garbage go? :

Where does all that garbage go? According to the environmental literacy council landfills are the most widely used solid waste management option. The landfill for Durham NC is located E Club Blvd this is considered the municipal solid waste landfill and is where our household and non-hazardous waste is sent. There are different types of landfills based on what type of waste is being discarded.

Where does all that garbage go? Open dumping was used until the 1970’s, but this created large population of roaches and rats and contaminated ground water, when leachates run off thru the soil of the dump site. ( O ur Global Environment) ) ( contaminatednation )

Current methods of disposal are sanitary landfills that use a process that compacts the trash over several layers deep and the leachate is sent directly to the waste water treatment facility for processing. Once completely filled these area can be turned in to green areas that include parks and walking paths.(Our Global Environment) ( hdimagegallery )

How does improper garbage disposal affect society? Creates health problems Can create a breeding ground for pests. Can affect wildlife Its expensive to correct actions from improper disposal of garbage, which could be reduced if people disposed of their trash properly, no littering or illegal dumping

What can we do to reduce the amount? :

What can we do to reduce the amount? We’ve all heard of the 3 R’s. (unh.edu)

North Carolinians throw away more than $164,375,460 in mixed paper each year. In a year, North Carolinians throw away enough plastic bottles to line the length of I-40 (in N.C.) 715 times North Carolinians throw away more than $16,819,500 in steel each year. Every year, North Carolinians throw away enough trash to circle the earth twice NC throws away about 270 million dollars’ worth of recyclable goods each year. Recycling in North Carolina is a job creator and a growing part of our state’s economy. Recycling employs more than 15,000 North Carolinians and recycling jobs have increased about 48 percent in the last ten years
