HOW DID INDIA GET ITS NAME?:

HOW DID INDIA GET ITS NAME? The official name of India is “The Republic of India”. The name “India” derives from the River Indus, which is most likely derived from the Sanskrit Sindhu, meaning “river”. The official Sanskrit name of India is Bharat, after the name of the legendary king in the epic Mahabharata.

WHERE IS INDIA LOCATED?:

WHERE IS INDIA LOCATED? India lies to the north of the equator between 8' 4' and 37° 6' north latitude and 68° 7' and 97° 25' east longitude. It is bounded on the south west by the Arabian Sea and on the south east by the Bay of Bengal. On the north, north east and north west lie the Himalayan ranges. Kanyakumari constitutes the southern tip of the Indian peninsula where it gets narrower and narrower, loses itself into the Indian Ocean.

Indian Flag The Indian flag has three horizontal bands of color. Each standing for something different. Saffron is for courage and sacrifice. White is for truth and peace. Lastly, Green is for faith, fertility, and chivalry.

CLIMATE :

CLIMATE The Climate of Asia is moist across southeast sections, and dry across much of the interior. Some of the largest daily temperature ranges on Earth occur in western sections of Asia . The monsoon circulation dominates across southern and eastern sections, due to the presence of the Himalayas forcing the formation of a thermal low which draws in moisture during the summer. Southwestern sections of the continent are hot. Siberia is one of the coldest places in the Northern Hemisphere, and can act as a source of arctic air masses for North America. The most active place on Earth for tropical cyclone activity lies northeast of the Philippines and south of Japan, and the phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation modulates where in Asia landfall is more likely to occur.

ABOUT INDIA RELIGION Every major religion is represented in India. About 80% of Indians are Hindu, with Muslims being the largest minority standing at approximately 13% Language Official language- Hindu and English. The government also recognizes 17 other languages. ( Asshiamese, Bengali, Guajarati, Nepali, Manipuri, Konkani, Kannada, Kashmiri, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Apart from these languages about 1,652 dialects are spoken.

MARRIAGE Every wonder why Indian women wore those dots on their head? These are actually known as Bindi’s which is a sign of marriage and the sanctity of the institution of marriage. (some refer to it as the third-eye) - Arranged marriages (90%) are traditional in the Indian culture and it is believed to be the best way to bring two families closer together. Marriage is not perceived as a relationship between two people but as a relationship between two families…Especially between the girl and family because the wives usually go to live and take care of her husbands family.

ATTIRE:

ATTIRE Clothing in India varies from region to region depending on the ethnicity , geography, climate and cultural traditions of the people of that region. Historically, men and women's clothing has evolved from simple Langotas and loincloths to cover the body to elaborate costumes not only used in daily wear but also on festive occasions as well as rituals and dance performances. In urban areas, western clothing is common and uniformly worn by people of all strata . India also has a great diversity in terms of weaves, fibres, colours and material of clothing. Colour codes are followed in clothing based on the religion and ritual concerned. For instance, Hindus lady's wear white clothes to indicate mourning while Parsis and Christians wear white to weddings

TOP TOURIST ATTRACTIONS The most popular tourist attraction in India are the temples of Khajuraho which are famous for exotic sculptures. The Taj Mahal which is in Arga and was built in memory of the Emperor Shah’s favorite wife. Kanha national park which is said to be one of the most beautiful wild reserves in Asia. The Kerala backwaters which is a chain of lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arbian Sea coast.

INTERESTING FACTS India is about 1/3 the size of the United States and it is the second most populous country in the world with a population of 1,166,079,217 India has the world’s largest movie industry which is based in the city of Mumbai (known as the “city of dreams”. In India the left hand is considered unclean and is never used for eating. The reason being is that many Indians find toilet paper repellent and consider it cleaner to splash water in the appropriate direction with the left hand. More than a million Indians are millionaires, yet most Indians live on less than two dollars a day. 35% live below live below the poverty line.

A little something extra…. Superstitions and Omens In some parts of the country it is believed that Monday is not an auspicious day for shaving and cutting hair. Thursdays and Saturdays are not good days for washing hair. Tuesday is believed not good to reach anyone’s home from a journey. Saturday is considered bad for purchasing metal or eather as it brings bad luck in terms of financial prosperity. If a woman’s right hand is itching it is not good. It is an indications that she is going to get bad news, but if her left hand is itching it is good. If a male’s right hand is itching it is not good, it shows that he is going to cry soon, if his left hand is itching he is considered lucky. Nails should not be cut during the night time in fear of evil spirits. Indian women are allowed to have up to 8 sons only.
