Originally the term “literature” only applied to the works that were written and published in traditional hardcopy text such as novels, poems, and essays. In addition, print disembodies literature and it is inferior because the poem or text becomes abstract. Most people respond best to people and not abstractions. Text is also considered as a EXAMPLE: Homer’s Odyssey COOL medium and therefore when one thinks of literature, one thinks of a cool medium. Slide 3: However if we simply read the texts, then the majority of what is most appealing seems to be gone. These days the term “literature” can also be applied to the works of present-day artists that we have been “reading” thus far. Slide 4: Spoken word poetry is a form of literary art in which lyrics, poetry, or stories are to be spoken or performed rather than read; one of its goals include social criticism. A form of contemporary literature that has evolved in recent years is spoken word poetry. Poetry becomes literature when it’s an event. It activates a person’s imagination and engages their attention. Generally this type of literature targets a diverse audience who are usually in their 20’s and up. A notable artist who engages in spoken word poetry is Rives. His emotions, facial expressions, and hand motions while reciting his poems ultimately make the poem what it is meant to be, and additionally he is therefore considered as a poet. d Slide 5: Another modern-day artist, Benjamin Zephaniah, is essentially bringing poetry to individuals through technological means. He is reciting poetry that is filmed, and individuals are able to view his work through videos that are posted on the Internet. In addition, his performance is regarded as poetry since the lines contain rhythm and verse which are in fact characteristics of literature. In Zephaniah’s poem, we can embody it unlike disembodied traditional text because we see a person, hear a voice; therefore we can respond, feel, and grasp the poem. This is also considered a Zephaniah’s hot medium since the oral poem fills our senses. “Cybersex” is a key example of the relevance of "hot" media to the real world, as portrayed through the metaphorical and literal meanings depicted by each line. Both Zephaniah and Rives embody the poem. Their voice and body are essential to the poem; without them the poem does not exist. It fills your senses with data, audio, images, video clips, and text. Here we are re-mediating Benjamin Zephaniah’s “Cybersex” into a more visual and more compelling medium. Through metaphorical relationships, we have made Zepheniah's work even “hotter” since we have incorporated multiple senses into his words. Through the visual media, a different perspective of his poem is understood and can be related to by the mass public. Slide 39: THE END You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
