Fawaz Fawaz.2009@hotmail.com Ksu-sa WDM : WDM Is a technology which multiplexes multiple optical carrier signals on a single optical fiber by using different wavelengths (colours) of laser light to carry different signals. This allows for a multiplication in capacity, in addition to enabling bidirectional communications over one strand of fiber. This is a form of frequency division multiplexing (FDM) but is commonly called wavelength division multiplexing. WDM Components : WDM Components l1 l2 l3 l1 l2 l3 l1...n l1...n lens prism prism lens Fiber optic Light source Photo detector Light sources : Light sources LED (light emitting diode) LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) Led vs laser : Led vs laser prism : prism Is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces. The exact angles between the surfaces depend on the application. Optical fiber types : Optical fiber types - Quartz optical fiber(long distance transmissions) - Glass optical fiber - Plastic optical fiber (most widely used for short distances, cheapest and slowest) pof : pof is an optical fiber which is made out of plastic. PMMA & Polystyrene are used as fiber core, with refractive index of 1.49 & 1.59 respectively. Generally, fiber cladding is made of silicone resin (refractive index ~1.46). High refractive index difference is maintained between core and cladding. POF have high numerical aperture. Have high mechanical flexibility and low cost. Pof attenuation graph : Pof attenuation graph WDM over POf : WDM over POf The only possibility to increase the bandwidth is to raise the data rate. This reduces the signal-to-noise-ratio lenses : lenses is an optical device with perfect or approximate axial symmetry which transmits and refracts light, converging or diverging the beam. Photo detector : Photo detector A fiber optic detector is an optoelectronic transducer that converts optical energy to electrical energy. thanks : thanks You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
