How I used media technologies in the construction, research, planning, and evaluation of my product.

Firstly, to decide what song to base my three products on I had to do extensive research into different genres of music and this genres video types. In doing this I used YouTube to search different music and I created a Last FM account which showed me different types of music I might be interested in.

I also used mp3 players to listen to different tracks, I watched different music videos on TV, I watched Scuzz, a Rock and Punk Rock music channel. On this I watched a large variety of music videos of this genre, then to contrast this I watched the music on MTV which was more mainstream so I could see the difference between the two.

For research and planning the media technology I used most was the internet because it enabled me to access lots of different things- videos, magazine articles, blogs etc, and made it quick and simple to do so.

However, I didn’t want to limit myself to just the internet so I looked at magazines too, such as Kerrang! and MOJO for some more information of different bands and their images. This helped a lot with my research when it came to create my digipak as I saw lots of examples in the magazines.

When researching digipaks I looked in magazines, on the internet and looked at my parents collection. Although most of their music is dated, I found this useful as I could really explore the digipak and see how all the images and text worked well together.

Conventions, such as the bands name and the album name being in a large, eye catching font on the front part of the digipak, were learnt from looking at my parents digipaks and it made it easier to identify conventions as I could lay out all the digipaks side by side and compare.

When creating the digipak I used: SLR Canon EOS 600D To take pictures for my pack. I study Photography alongside media which was useful as I could use my composition knowledge to get interesting shots. Photoshop To edit these images on. I have a detailed mostly self taught understanding of Photoshop and I used it almost every day in Photography and I experimented a lot with it last year when creating my music magazine. I don’t often do shoots like I did for my digipak so it was a new experience for me but one I enjoyed.

Canon mX395 Lazer Printer To print my edited images on. I wanted them to be of the best quality possible so they looked professional so I used a good printer and glossy photopaper to ensure it looked the best it could.

When creating my music video I used: GoPro Hero 3 Silver Edition To record all my footage. This camera is one of the best quality compact cameras you can get and I waited until I went to Florida to buy it as it is slightly cheaper over there. I was impressed at the footage this camera captured and its performance as a whole. I had a few problems with it, such as it hasn’t got a very good battery life and the clips took up a lot of space on my computer which made it run slower. The only other problem was how, due to the sheer size of the clips, when editing the clips speed (making it faster slower or backwards) when I tried to preview the clips it would often jump from frame to frame and not run smoothe. However, after asking for help from an ICT teacher at school we soon sorted it out.

Adobe Premiere Pro cs5 I had only used Premiere Pro (PP) a few times before a few years ago so it took me a while to get to grips with how to use it, but once I had the basics down I found editing my clips together very enjoyable. The software is quite advanced and is what is used when professionals edit music videos together for bands. The software is quite complex so I spent time researching how to use it to get the best result I could. I think that if I used a more simple editor, such as Windows Movie Maker, my music video wouldn’t look as professional as it does. I am proud of the music video I produced and would like to make more music videos again soon. iTunes To purchase the track I was using

Google Drive Due to the fact I couldn’t buy the track at school I used Google Drive to store the track on so I could access it from school. I bought the track at home, put it on Google Drive, then accessed this track from school. This was quick and simple to do. The Internet To help me understand how to use Premiere. YouTube I uploaded my finished video to YouTube. This is a very popular site with over 50,000 people using it to view videos every day. I feel that most people know how to use YouTube so it’s simple for anyone to find my video if they want to. Also, it lets me know how many people have viewed my video, so far it has just under 100 views, 6 ‘likes’ and 2 comments.

When creating the website the media technologies I used were: The Internet Wix.com I decided to make more than just the front page of the website even though I was only required to make the front page because I wanted people to be able to navigate round my site like you would a bands real site. I uploaded pictures of the band, added tour dates with support bands and made it so you could actually press the ‘buy tickets’ button and it would take you to a revelent part of the site. Admittedly I think I may have spent a bit too much time on making the website but it was one of the most enjoyable part of this coursework and I had a lot of fun creating it.
