In 2011 nearly two-fifths of UK employers overall (50% in the public sector) report that stress-related absence has increased over the past year 1 Work-related stress caused workers in Great Britain to lose 10.8 million working days in 2010/11. On average each person suffering from this condition took 27 days off work 2

However, if stress becomes too excessive and prolonged, mental and physical illness may develop. 3
