What is Twitter?:

What is Twitter? Twitter is a free micro-blogging service that allows you to post anything to anyone in 140 characters or less.

Experts love to post their articles Connect with past and present customers in a personal way

Let's start with basic Twitter terminology:

Let's start with basic Twitter terminology Handle Tweets Follow Retweet Direct Message Hashtag

Handle:

Handle Your handle is your Twitter name Ex:  SocialMediaEmma Your handle is part of the dedicated URL to your page Ex: www.twitter.com/socialmediaemma To send some a message, simply place an "@" sign in front of their handle Ex:  @socialmediaemma Blah Blah Blah

Tweets:

Tweets After you compose a message of 140 characters or less and hit send, your message is called a "tweet". If you choose to post a link, use an URL shortener such as bit.ly so you don't use up all your characters.

Reading Tweets Sent to You:

Reading Tweets Sent to You From your home page, click on the "@Mentions" link where you will find messages to you or where you have been recommended.

Managing Your Tweets:

Managing Your Tweets Use TweetDeck or HootSuite to manage multiple conversations

Follow:

Follow When you add someone to your contacts, you are "following" them and their tweets will show up on your home page.

Replies:

Replies This is a message sent directly to someone you are following. To send a message to someone, simply place "@" before their handle.

Retweet:

Retweet When you repost someone's message on your page. The author and message stay intact so you are spreading their message while still giving them credit. To retweet a message, click the "retweet" link at the bottom of the message.

Your Messages Retweeted:

Your Messages Retweeted To see if your tweets have been shared, click on the "Retweets" link from your home page. You will then be able to see what has been shared and by whom.

Direct Message (DM):

Direct Message (DM) A direct message is a message sent to a private Twitter mailbox. Only the recipient will be able to view it.

Hashtag (#):

Hashtag (#) You can categorize your tweets by placing a "#" before a keyword in your post or after your post. Do not use spaces between multiple words.
