Problem Statement :

Problem Statement Manchurian University

University Problems :

University Problems Management resources overwhelmed & cumbersome. Workstations require staff on site in order to install operating systems. Application servers taxed in order to deliver per order profiles. Workstation profiles require excessive time to build profiles.

University Solutions :

University Solutions Virtualization Technology migration needed. VMware rollout solution explored. Will allow simple management to provision virtual desktops. Alleviate hands on staff presence. Lower workstation purchase cost. Negate previous profile delays. Virtualize applications and isolate them from OS images for ease of management and updates.

Requirements :

Requirements Manchurian University

Applications :

Applications No new application licenses. VMware View Enterprise purchase needed. Allows for virtual desktop deployment to users at any node. Virtual experience transmits only images from server to client. Processing done at server. Latency reduced to near zero. Master image with individual clones based on changes. Allows for easy base image creation and updates.

Applications :

Applications No new application licenses. VMware View Enterprise purchase needed. Allows for virtual desktop deployment to users at any node. Virtual experience transmits only images from server to client. Processing done at server. Latency reduced to near zero. Master image with clones reduces storage. Allows for easy base image creation and updates. Cost: $8,706.

Devices :

Devices VMware certified Thin Clients with PCoIP protocol support needed. MDF core switch upgrade to Cisco 3750E stack with 10 Gigabit modules to handle future network growth and possible campus wide virtualization. Upgrade of backbone switch to Cisco ME3400 Metro Ethernet Switch. 2 Dell PowerEdge R905 Servers for VMware Suite. Dell AX4-5i 1Gbit SCSI SAN array for virtual images(12 Terabytes). Cisco 3750G 24 & Cisco 3750 G 48 for Thin Client to Virtual Server connections.

Network Architecture :

Network Architecture Manchurian University

Network Topology :

Network Topology Functional areas separated into VLANS. 802.1Q and VTP used for security and ease of management. SNET connection is only Hard Boundary

Performance :

Performance 3 Service Level Agreements. (SL3) VOIP 76.63Kbps – (SL2) SNET 100Mbps – (SL1) VMware 80Mbps PCoIP adapts traffic to current state of network. 80Mbps per thin client is extreme computing limit. Actual studied usage is less than 1Mbps for normal usage.
