BLGR 202:Intermediate Greek Grammar & Exegesis Dr. Scott Yoshikawa

Semantic Analysis :

Semantic Analysis Structuring text according to logical propositions

Semantic Analysis :

Semantic Analysis “Logic … is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.” (Spock)

Semantic Analysis :

Contrast with Syntactical Syntactical analysis: Emphasizes significance of lexical repetition, themes, & their connections Observes physical connections within the whole structure with a diverse combination of intertextual relationships. Attempts to draw out a rudimentary outline useful for study and perhaps bible study/ sermon preparation. Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis :

Contrast with Syntactical Semantic analysis: Emphasizes logical relationships amongst each of the smaller and larger parts Draws out the whole structure and flow of the argument / narrative Attempts to delineate what the author is trying to say following a strict order of thinking and reasoning. Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis :

How to begin Propositions Start by isolating the individual, self-contained statements or propositions in your text—usually sentences or clauses. This is usually marked out by the grammar of the text with key transition words that logically link one part to another: “because,” “for,” “just as,” etc. Once you’ve organized your text, it’s then a matter of correctly labeling the logical relationship of every proposition to one another. Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis :

What it looks like: (1 Corinthians 3:1-2) 1 But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, Semantic Analysis

Propositions :

Two basic types … Coordinate The propositions have an “equal” status in relationship to one another. Ex: “He is happy, but she is sad.” Subordinate One proposition is logically subordinate to the other (not that the subordinate is unimportant). Ex: “He is happy, because she is sad.” Propositions

Coordinate Propositions :

Series Both propositions are equally prominent But no movement toward a goal/ climax “we laughed and had a good time” “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction” In the Greek, look for: kai/, de/, te/, ou¡te, oujde/, mhte/, mhde/ Coordinate Propositions

Coordinate Propositions :

Progression Both propositions are equally prominent But the statements show a progression or movement toward a climax. Ex: “They stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him” (Mk 15:20) In the Greek, look for: kai/, de/, te/, ou¡te, oujde/, mhte/, mhde/ Coordinate Propositions

Coordinate Propositions :

Alternative Both propositions are equally prominent Different possibilities arising from a situation “Some were convinced while others disbelieved” (Acts 28:24) “Are you the Christ or should we look for someone else?” In the Greek, look for: aÓlla/, de/, h¡, me/n … de/ Coordinate Propositions

Coordinate Propositions :

Summary: Series “we laughed and had a good time” Progression “They stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him” (Mk 15:20) Alternative “Some were convinced while others disbelieved” (Acts 28:24) Coordinate Propositions

Coordinate Propositions :

Summary: Series / Simultaneous “we laughed and had a good time” Progression / Sequential “They stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him” (Mk 15:20) Alternative / Contrastive “Some were convinced while others disbelieved” (Acts 28:24) Coordinate Propositions
