8 Defending the Empire The Empire was threatened by: During the Fourth Crusade in 1204, Crusaders from the west went as far east as Constantinople. Although the Crusaders were supposed to be on the same side as the Byzantines, they attacked the city and stole many of its treasures. The Crusaders went on to rule Constantinople for nearly 60 years.
