Premium member Presentation Transcript Socrates : Socrates The great western philosopher The life of Socrates : The life of Socrates According to legend the life of Socrates was portrayed through the plays of Aristophanes the great playwright. His father was Sophroniscus and his mother was Panaretos. He married a short woman named Xanthippe and they had 3 sons. They were Lamprocles, Sophroniscus, and Maecenas. ( we don’t know if any of this was true about Socrates life) Socrates’ students : Socrates’ students Socrates didn’t record any of his work. His methods was recorded through the eyes of his student, Plato. The Socratic Method : The Socratic Method It is believed that most of Plato’s stories were about his departed teacher. His main interest was the thought process of the human brain, one of the concepts of Western Philosophy which was originated in Greece. His basic Philosophy was answering his students with a question to make them dig deeper in their minds to find conclusions. The Downfall of Athens : The Downfall of Athens At this time Athens is recovering from the defeat of the Peloponnesian War. Socrates admired Sparta, archrival of Athens especially after the horrible defeat. This was just the beginning of Socrates’ problems The cause of Socrates’ death : The cause of Socrates’ death The Delphic Oracle said that Socrates was the smartest Greek of all. He knew this wasn’t true. He thought that he didn’t obtain knowledge at all. He walked the streets of Athens asking the “wisest” people riddles to see if they have knowledge. No Greek politician, or philosopher could answer the riddle. For acknowledging his own ignorance people said this made him truly the smartest Greek. This was an embarrassment to all of the respected people that failed to answer the riddle. Socrates’ trial : Socrates’ trial He was accused of corrupting minds of young Athenians even though this wasn’t true. By making the children ask why, they questioned their parents which upset the society. As a result, he had a death sentence. According to Xenophon's story, Socrates gave the jury reasons to die. He claimed he was a “gadfly” which is a term used by the Greeks meaning to corrupt the status quo by asking questions. He was executed by drinking poisoned hemlock juice. According to Plato’s story this was an act of frustration because the loss of the wars. They built a bronze statue in his honor. Socrates Contributions : Socrates Contributions 1. Socrates was an awakened thinker that questioned the moral and political aspects of Athens and found flaws. 2. He pioneered the use of inductive reasoning which is to make conclusions. Aristotle stated that Socrates founded the Scientific Method which refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena. 3. He showed the world the meaning of commitment; he could have escaped the death sentence but went through with it because it doesn’t cope with his philosophy which was to question. Socrates had these and many other important contributions to mankind.
