He put a lot of emphasis on his girls getting an education. One of his favorite memories was a picture of 10 players who posted a 105-7 record between 1988-91. Because Education Mattered… His love for academics was almost as passionate as his desire to win. Coach McCain developed a reputation as a great builder of character by motivating and instilling confidence in his players "Not only must you be a winner on the field, but also in the classroom." A stirring tribute was paid to Coach Mac by a Virginia Union player, Jimmy Dilworth, who was MVP of the first CIAA Basketball Tournament held in 1946 in Washington, DC’s Turner Arena. Even though they lost in a thrilling 3-OT game to McLendon’s North Carolina ‘ Screamin ’ Eagles’, Jimmy paid him the highest tribute: “… The cohesion of the Eagles and their determination, led to their victory…and I attribute this to a man who stood alone (above) his coaching colleagues, Coach John McLendon .” Because Education Mattered… An Ambassador of Black College Sports and Beyond…John B. Facts & Figures about Black College Sports History & Legends According to different sources, there are between 101-106 Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) There are current 5 Sports Conferences: CIAA, EIAC, MEAC, SIAC, SWAC As of 2011, there are 23 Black college players are in the NFL Hall of Fame There are 5 Black college players and 4 coaches in the NBA Hall of Fame There are 10 Black college Coaches who have won 500 or more games in any sport Althea Gibson, All-Time Tennis great is an Black college alumna of Florida A&M University Since 1946, the CIAA Basketball Tournament has been one of the nation’s best attended venues The SWAC has one of the best football attendance records in the nation Get more Black College Sports History & Legends … www.ehbcsports.com
