What is Interchange? :
What is Interchange? Interchange is the set rate charged by the Issuing Bank.
This rate varies depending on the transaction risk:
Card Present and Swiped (base rate)
Card Keyed (higher risk = higher rate)
Taken over Telephone (higher risk = higher rate)
Different types of cards also have different rates.
* Corporate Cards
* Rewards Cards
* Etc.
Interchange rates are set by the issuing bank and will be the same regardless of who your processing company is.
Tiered Pricing :
Tiered Pricing These Interchange rates are set rates and cannot be changed regardless of your processing company. However, most processing companies use what is called Tiered Pricing. With this pricing you have the following tiers:
Qualified = Basic Interchange +
Processing Fee.
Mid-Qualified = Basic Interchange +
Processing Fee + downgrades Fees
Non-Qualified = Basic Interchange +
Processing Fee + Much Higher
Downgrades.
Through this billing method, you can receive charges of 4.5% or higher depending on how many tiers the transaction falls under and the processing company.
Interchange Plus Pricing :
Interchange Plus Pricing eBridge uses Interchange Plus. With Interchange Plus, the merchant will only be charged the interchange rate + processing fee
To avoid downgrades the merchant will want to make sure they are doing the following:
Card Present & Swiped (not
keyed)
Address Verification (have
terminal ask for zip code).
Minimum 2 Day Settlement
