WRITING IS AWESOME:

WRITING IS AWESOME David Venditto, M.A.

Quoting versus Paraphrasing:

Quoting versus Paraphrasing Direct quotes should be used in the following cases: When you’re trying to prove a story says something When the quote is from an authority that will add credibility to what you’re saying When you cannot think of a better way to phrase something Paraphrasing should be used in the following cases: When a lot of quotes have already been used in a given paragraph When you need to make your own connections between ideas When you feel clarification is needed (of what an author said)

Quotes:

Quotes Obviously, evidence is need in any paper, and some of this evidence will come in the form of quotes. These quotes must be integrated smoothly into the work of students, and no more than half of any paragraph should be quotes. Anything copied word for word must be placed in quotes, and anything four lines of longer is block quoted. Block quotes are single-spaced, and double indented. Block quotes do not need quotes because anything meeting he above two characteristics is understood to be a quote.

Paraphrasing:

Paraphrasing Twin Peaks is an American Emmy Award -nominated, Peabody - and Golden Globe -winning television serial drama created by David Lynch and Mark Frost , first broadcast on April 8 , 1990 and last broadcast on June 10 , 1991 . The show is set in the fictional town of Twin Peaks, Washington . The quote on the left is from Wikipedia, which should not be used in student papers. However, if one were to paraphrase the quote on the left, it would be necessary to change quite a bit to avoid plagiarism. It is not, in other words, acceptable to only change one or two words.

Acceptable: Twin peaks took place in a fabricated place in Washington state. The show aired from April 8, 1990-June 10, 1991, and had garnered a great deal of praise, including an Emmy nomination, and a Golden Globe and Peabody Award.

Tips for Good Paraphrasing:

Tips for Good Paraphrasing For adequate paraphrasing, it is recommended that students read the quote, and then write a paraphrase without looking at the original quote. In other words, a proper paraphrase can only be done if you first understand the quote, and then remove the other author’s sentences from your mind. A proper paraphrase should sound like you, not the author.
