Mission & History Mission: Provide access to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document American experience History: Seed planted in a pilot program from 1990-1994 National Digital Library Program launches in 1994 Library of Congress sponsored competition resulted in 23 digital collections that complements American Memory Exceeded goal of making 5 million items available online before 2000
