Venugopal. MDS. : www.dentalhealth.in 4 Indirect retainer: Is the component of R.P.D. that assist the direct retainers in preventing displacement of the distal extension denture base by functioning through lever action on the opposite side of the fulcrum line when the denture base moves away from the tissues in pure rotation around the fulcrum line. Slide 5: www.dentalhealth.in 5 An Indirect retainer should be placed as far from the distal extension as possible in a prepared rest seat on a tooth capable of supporting its function. Slide 6: www.dentalhealth.in 6 Fulcrum Line: Is an imaginary line around which a R.P.D. tends to rotate under masticatory forces. Class I Slide 7: www.dentalhealth.in 7 Class II Slide 8: www.dentalhealth.in 8 Class III Slide 9: www.dentalhealth.in 9 Class IV FUNCTIONS OF I.R. : www.dentalhealth.in 10 FUNCTIONS OF I.R. Indirect retainer has several functions: It contributes to the support. It contributes to stability of the partial denture particularly in counteracting horizontal forces applied to the denture. Slide 11: www.dentalhealth.in 11 Auxillary Functions of I.R. Activate the D.R. to prevent movement of distal extension base away from the tissues. Tend to reduce the anteroposterior tilting of the principal abutment. Contact of minor connector with axial tooth surface aids in stabilization. Slide 12: www.dentalhealth.in 12 4. Anterior teeth supporting the I.R. are stabilized against lingual movement. 5. It may act as an auxillary rest to support a portion of the major connector. 6. It may provide the first indication for the need of reline an extension base partial denture. PRINCIPLES FOR USING INDIRECT RETAINER : www.dentalhealth.in 13 PRINCIPLES FOR USING INDIRECT RETAINER More than one fulcrum line may be present. Indirect Retainer must be placed as far posterior as possible from DEB. for leverage advantage. Most ideal location of Indirect Retainer is in the vicinity of C.I. but of poor strength canine or P.M. is considered. Two I.R. is choosen to compensate for the compromise in distance. FORMS OF INDIRECT RETAINER : www.dentalhealth.in 14 FORMS OF INDIRECT RETAINER Auxillary occlusal rest Canine extensions from occlusal rest Canine rest Continuous bar retainer and linguoplate Modification area Rugae support. AUXILLARY OCCLUSAL REST : www.dentalhealth.in 15 AUXILLARY OCCLUSAL REST Slide 16: www.dentalhealth.in 16 Providing indirect retention by increasing the distance of a resting element from the fulcrum line. When patient premolar serve as primary abutment. Canine extension, continuous bar retainer and linguoplate should ever be used without terminal rest. Slide 17: www.dentalhealth.in 17 CANINE REST Mesial marginal ridge of the 1st P.M. is too close to the fulcrum line. This type of rest is more effective by placing the minor connector in the embrassure anterior to the canine extending to mesioincisal rest Slide 18: www.dentalhealth.in 18 CANINE EXTENSIONS FROM OCCLUSAL REST : www.dentalhealth.in 19 CANINE EXTENSIONS FROM OCCLUSAL REST Slide 20: www.dentalhealth.in 20 CONTINUOUS BAR RETAINER AND LINGUOPLATE : www.dentalhealth.in 21 CONTINUOUS BAR RETAINER AND LINGUOPLATE Terminal rest is the I.R. In class I and class II, the continuous bar retainer or the superior border of the linguoplate should never be placed above the middle 3rd of the tooth – so that the orthodontic movement can be avoided. MODIFICATION AREA : www.dentalhealth.in 22 MODIFICATION AREA The anterior abutment on the tooth supported side is secondary abutment, provide support, horizontal stabilization. RUGAE SUPPORT. : www.dentalhealth.in 23 RUGAE SUPPORT. Provide indirect retention for class I situation. Rugae area if firm and provide I.R. It can be used in case of U shaped or horseshoe design. FACTORS INFLUENCING EFFECTIVENESS OF INDIRECT RETAINER : www.dentalhealth.in 24 FACTORS INFLUENCING EFFECTIVENESS OF INDIRECT RETAINER Effectiveness of the Direct Retainer Distance from Fulcrum Line Length of the DEB. Location of fulcrum line Displacement of I.R. Rigidity of the connectors Effectiveness of supporting tooth surface.
