Germ theory of disease : 

Germ theory of disease First causation was attributed to 1) Supernatural theory 2) Theory of contagion 3) Miasma tic theory 4) Theory of spontaneous generation 5) Finally germ theory in 1860 when French bacteriologist Louis Pasteur demonstrated presence of bacteria in air Anthrax by Robert Koch

Birth of preventive medicine : 

Birth of preventive medicine Preventive medicine got a firm foundation after germ theory and in later part of 19th century with the discovery of Pasteur's anti-rabies treatment, cholera vaccine, diphtheria antitoxin, anti-typhoid vaccine, antiseptics and disinfectants. Ross demonstrated that malaria was due to anopheles. Quarantine ,water purification,pasturisation of milk, proper disposal of swage, development of laboratories.

Modern medicine : 

Modern medicine Two major branches , curative and preventive acute infections , cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, mental illness and accidents. Aetiology of diseases, Social, economic, genetic, environmental, and psychosocial factors

Curative Medicine : 

Curative Medicine Primary objective is the removal of disease from one patient. Employs modalities, diagnostic techniques, drugs like antibiotics. Ent, ophthalmology, cardiology, obstratrics, gyne., paediatrics,....

Preventive Medicine : 

Preventive Medicine Is applied to “ healthy people” customarily by actions affecting large numbers of populations Its primary objective is prevention of disease and promotion of health. Decline in morbidity and mortality of following diseases, diphtheria, tetanus, typhoid, polio,..... Field of nutrition, IDD, nutritional blindness, anaemia. Discovery of insecticides is also great achievement to control vector born disease like malaria, plague, dengue

Cont.... Screening of disease in apparently healthy people has remained an important part of preventive medicine. Screening of “risk factors” and “ high risk group” since we don't have definitive treatment against chronic diseases. Preventive Geriatrics, paediatrics, cardiology diabetology

Primary secondary and tertiary prevention : 

Primary secondary and tertiary prevention Health promotion, stop risk factors Early detection of disease, followed by appropriate intervention. Aims to reduce the impact of the disease and promote quality of life through active rehabilitation

Social medicine : 

Social medicine Man is biological and also social being and has social causes , social consequences and social therapy. It elucidates social factors in disease etiology.
