Applied Anatomy of Q.femoris : :

All four parts of the quadriceps muscle attach to the patella via the quadriceps tendon. All four quadriceps are powerful extensors of the knee joint. They are crucial in walking, running, jumping and squatting. Since Rectus femoris is attached to the ilium , it is also a flexor of the hip. This action is also crucial to walking or running as it swings the leg forward into the ensuing step Cont… Applied Anatomy of Q.femoris :

Slide 9:

The quadriceps, specifically the vastus medialis plays the important role of stabilizing the patella and the knee joint during gait. Hence any injury be it direct as being hit by the chair or blown directly or indirect injury caused as in case of running, over the quadriceps group of muscles causes contusion/tear/rupture/sprain/hernia of the Q.femoris muscle, there by causing severe pain, swelling associated with limping Cont…

Slide 10:

Microscopic sections of human quadriceps tendon as it inserts into the patella show no crimping and no cement line. This is unlike other tendon insertion sites. The interdigitation between collagen fibers and the distinction between tendon and bone was least distinct along the anterior third of the patella. It is because of this anatomical nature of the muscle group at it’s insertion point, the vulnerability of injury is more.
