The students within her classroom all have specific learning disabilities in reading and mathematics. I visited on Mondays for three hours over the course of five weeks. With The FCAT quickly approaching I felt that it was important that each student gain a set of tips and skills to help improve their test scores. Each week I would work with 6 different groups of students where we would work on reading skills that would help them succeed in all areas. I would prepare activities that included the use of their guided reading textbook and homemade worksheets that would help them follow the story and pick out important details.Participant Demographics: Participant Demographics All the students that I worked with were considered students with specific learning disabilities. They all have specific Individualized Education Plans and many of them had Behavior Improvement Plans as well. The students ranged from third to fifth grade and I broke each grade level in half and worked with them. Many of the students that I worked with were from Hispanic backgrounds but there were also students who were white and black I worked with 25 different students 6 in third grade 8 in fourth grade 9 in fifth gradeService in Action: Service in Action I did not receive permission from the parents to take pictures of their students.Perceptions of Differences: Perceptions of DifferencesConnections to Your Course: Connections to Your Course Differentiated instruction: this is instruction that is not all the same but tailored to each individual student’s needs Mrs. Van has the students broken up into 2-3 groups per grade level and works with each group individually to make sure they are getting comprehensible materail. IEP: Individualized Education Plan is a legal document that indicates services that are necessary for the student to be successful. Mrs. Van and I went through the process of making and IEP and what is important to look for in the student. We also went over the software that they use to develop the IEPs in Seminole County The first one will help me because it showed me that it can be done in the classroom and not just in our textbooks.Civic Engagement: Civic Engagement I love to volunteer and give back to the community. As a future teacher I feel that it is my duty to help our future world suceeed. These children are our future and they need all they extra help that they can receive.
