Respiratory chain- oxidises reducing equivalents and acts as proton pump:

Respiratory chain- oxidises reducing equivalents and acts as proton pump The reducing equivalents which are obtained by catabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins are taken up by NAD or FAD These H + and electrons are taken up by electron transport chain and finally attached with oxygen to form H 2 O. While transferring the electrons and protons the components of ETC pumps protons using the electrochemical gradient produced by transferring the protons and electrons free download available in www.authorstream.com. search drhari

Components :

Components The components of ETC are arranged in more negative to more positive redox potentials for smooth flow of reducing equivalents and e - Complex I. NADH-Q oxidoreductase Complex III.Q-Cytochrome c Oxidoreductase Complex IV. Cytochrome c oxidase Complex II. Succinate Q reductase free download available in www.authorstream.com. search drhari

Functions of components:

Functions of components Complex I- transfers electrons from NADH to coenzyme Q. contains Iron sulphur proteins. Fe 3+ accepts e - becoming Fe 2+ . Fe 2+ donates electrons to next complex and becomes Fe 3+ Complex III- transfers electrons from Q to cyt c Complex IV- contains heme-transfers e - from cyt c to O 2 to produce H 2 O Complex II- some substrates with more redox potential than NADH transfers directly to II. II transfers them to III free download available in www.authorstream.com. search drhari

Steps of ETC:

Steps of ETC NADH + H + obtained from dehydrogenase reactions transfers 2e - and 2H + to FMN of complex I. FMN transfers 2e - to Fe-S. the 2H + is released into the surroundings. Fe-S transfers 2e - to Ubiquinone Q Ubiquinone Q transfers 2 e - to complex III. Cyt b in complex III accepts them and transfers to Cyt c1. it is the transferred to Cyt c Cyt c transfers electrons to Cyt a-a 3 or cytochrome c oxidase(complex IV). It transfers 2e - to O 2 and 2H + is taken from surroundings to form H 2 O Overall reaction is 2H + + O 2 + 2e -  H 2 O Complex II transfers 2e - from FADH + H + to complex III free download available in www.authorstream.com. search drhari

ETC pumps protons to form a proton gradient:

ETC pumps protons to form a proton gradient The transfer of electrons from one complex to other creates an electrochemical potential. Using this the complexes pumps protons into the intermembrane space. Now the intermembrane space is full of protons and an electrical and chemical gradient is created. These protons enters back to matrix through a transporter called ATP synthase leading to ATP generation(oxidative phosphorylation) Complex I pumps 4H + , Complex II-0, Complex III-4, Complex IV-2 free download available in www.authorstream.com. search drhari
