VETERINARY GYNAECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS COLLEGE OF VETERINARY SCI. & ANIMAL HUSBANDRY ANAND Definition : Definition MRI Scan is a radiology technique that uses magnetism, radio waves & computer to produce image of body structures. MRI scan uses radiofrequency waves & strong magnetic field rather than x-rays to provide remarkably clear & detailed pictures of internal organs & tissues. MRI test done with a large machine that uses a magnetic field & pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs & structures inside the belly. In many cases MRI gives information that cannot be seen as well as with an x-ray, ultrasound or CT scan. It has multiplaner capability & no radiation burden & that makes MRI very attractive. History : History 1946 Bloch & Purcell discovered Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. 1967 Jackson first used in live animals. Radio waves remitted can be used to construct a diagnostic anatomic image through a computer assisted technique termed MRI. Indications : Indications MRI primarily used to demonstrate pathological or other physiological alteration of living tissues & commonly used for medical image. Best suited for soft tissue examination Disease detecting throught the body, head trauma to the brain aneurysms, stroke, tumor or inflammation of the spine Not only defining brain anatomy but in evaluating the integrity of the spinal cord, problem associated with vertebrae or intervertebral discs of the spine. Evaluate the structure of the heart & aorta, angiography. Slide 5: Provide valuable information of glands, abdominal organ, joint, soft tissue & bone Check the organs & blood vessels prior to organ transplantation of surgery. Find obstruction of any organ. It is more specific & sensitive in detecting, localizing & differentiating osetomyelitis, cellulites & abscess. MRI application is very wide, it is has numerous musculoskeletal application. Principle : Principle MRI scanner is tube surrounded by a giant circular magnet. The patient is placed on a movable table which is inserted into the magnet. The magnet creates a strong magnetic field which align the proton of hydrogen atoms which are then exposed to beam of radiowaves. This spins various protons of the body & they produce faint signal that is detected by the receiver portion of the MRI scanner. The receiver information is processed by a computer & an image is then produced. Benefits of MRI : Benefits of MRI MRI highly sensitive & non-invasive technique which provide accurate & detailed & anatomic images with good contrast. No radiation exposure. Painless Physician evaluate the function as well as the structure of many organ. Detect tiny changes of structures within the body. MRI scan C.M. less produce an allergic reaction as compared to x-ray & CT scanning. Invaluable tool in early diagnosis & evaluation of tumors. No known side effects of MRI scan. MRI Scanning : MRI Scanning Slide 9: MRI Scan of brain Canine Epilepsy You do not have the permission to view this presentation. In order to view it, please contact the author of the presentation.
